The trial of Roger Clemens on accusations of perjury in his testimony to Congress in February 2008, opens today in Washington, DC with jury selection. Among the witnesses which prosecutors are planning to call on are Commissioner Bud Selig, former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre, former teammates Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada and slugger Sammy Sosa. Clemens’ attorneys also plan to call on former managers and teammates – albeit different ones – to testify on behalf of the former pitcher.
In Game 6 of the Fall Classic, the Yankees captured their 27th World Championship and their first since 2000, with a 7-3 decision over the Phillies, the defending champs. Hideki Matsui, New York’s designated hitter, collects six RBIs, tying a World Series mark, and Andy Pettitte became the second pitcher to get the victory in all three postseason-clinching games, joining Derek Lowe, who accomplished the feat with Boston in 2004.
Alex Rodriguez’s Game 3 fly ball in the right-field corner of Citizens Bank Park becomes the subject of the first instant replay call in World Series history. The Yankee third baseman’s hit, initially ruled a double, is changed by the umpires to a home run after the replay clearly shows the ball going over the fence before striking a television camera and bouncing back to the field.
The Yankees sign starting pitcher Andy Pettitte to a $5.5 million, one-year deal, less than half the club’s original $10 million offer. The 36 year-old southpaw, however, can make an additional $4.5 million based on innings pitched and another $2 million dependent on days spent on the active roster.
After a moving ceremony celebrating the history of the 85 year-old ballpark, New York beat the Orioles in the last game ever played at Yankee Stadium, 7-3. Julia Ruth Stevens, the Babe’s daughter, throws out the ceremonial first pitch, and at the end of game, team captain Derek Jeter, standing in front of the mound, surrounded by his teammates, bids farewell to ‘House Ruth Built’ in an address in front of the 54,610 fans who attended the Bronx finale.
In a much anticipated congressional hearing, Roger Clemens and his former personal trainer, Brian McNamee, testify for four and a half hours concerning the allegations of the Rocket’s use of performance-enhancing drugs. Although no definitive conclusions are reached, Republicans appear to believe the seven-time Cy Young Award winner while Democrats seem to favor his chief accuser’s account of events.
2007 – The Mitchell Report on steroids in baseball is released, naming those players whom there was either evidence or testimony of using performance enhancing drugs. A handful of former Astros, including Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte are named. Newly-acquired shortstop Miguel Tejada also makes the list. Clemens, through an attorney, denies using steroids.
On September 19, 2007, New York’s Andy Pettitte won his 200th game, defeating the Orioles, 2-1 at Yankee Stadium. Pettitte became the 27th left-hander to reach the 200-win plateau.
Dontrelle Willis (22-10, 2.63), signing a record-setting one-year deal with the Marlins, avoids arbitration by agreeing to a $4.35 million one-year deal which could be worth $4.55 million if certain performance-based incentives are reached. The All-Star southpaw’s deal surpasses those for Roy Halladay and Andy Pettitte, who both inked $3.8 million contracts, for the highest amount ever given to a starting pitcher in his first year of arbitration eligibility.
