Barry Larkin, who spent his entire 19-year career with the Cincinnati Reds, is elected to the Hall of Fame with 86.4% of the vote by the Baseball Writers Association of America in his third year of eligibility. Larkin won the 1995 National League Most Valuable Player Award and was a 12-time All-Star, as well as the first shortstop to join the 30-30 club.
After 19 years at shortstop for the Cincinnati Reds, Barry Larkin announces his retirement as an active player, to become special assistant to Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden. A 12-time All-Star, National League MVP, and three-time Gold Glove winner, Larkin spent his entire career in Cincinnati, his hometown.
Geoff Jenkins hits two home runs, tying a major league record with five home runs in two games to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 10 – 0 victory over the Montreal Expos. Jenkins is the 22nd player in major league history to hit five homers in two games and the first National League player to do it in 10 years.
After rejecting a trade to the Mets, 36 year-old Barry Larkin agrees to a three-year, $27 million contract extension to continue to play for the Reds. The deal will keep the former Rookie of the Year (1986), NL’s MVP (1995), and 11-time All-Star shortstop in Cincinnati until 2003.
In the Reds’ 4 – 1 victory over Pirates, two sets of brothers appear in the same lineup for the first time in major league history. Stephen Larkin plays first, Bret Boone is at second, Barry Larkin is at short and Aaron Boone plays third making up the all-brother infield. Aaron Boone’s 3-run homer gives Brett Tomko (13-12) the complete game victory. Stephen Larkin is a career minor leaguer with a pacemaker and had a new one installed in August after his old one had a hiccup. Stephen hit .228 with three home run and 31 RBI in 80 games with the AA Chattanooga Lookouts this year.

Reds’ shortstop Barry Larkin wins the National League’s Most Valuable Player award, with Colorado outfielder Dante Bichette and Atlanta right-hander Greg Maddux as the runners-up in a close election. The Cincinnati infielder, the first shortstop since Maury Wills in 1962 to cop the prestigious prize, provided excellent defense and batted .319 to help his team to capture the NL West Division.
Atlanta SS Jeff Blauser hits three home runs in a 7 – 4 win over the Cubs. Blauser had hit only 39 round-trippers in the previous six seasons. He becomes only the 4th SS ever to hit three homers in a game, joining Ernie Banks, Barry Larkin and Freddie Patek.
