1977 – In the second game of a doubleheader loss in Boston, Tiger rookies Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell debut together. They will hold down the 2B and SS jobs in Detroit for a record 19 years. Boston prevails today, 5 – 1 and 8 – 6.
In a 2 – 1 win over Kansas City, Boston’s Jim Rice hits a 3rd-inning double and becomes the first Boston player since Ted Williams in 1939 to hit 20 homers, 20 doubles and 10 triples in a season. Between Williams and Rice, only Charlie Keller (1946), Joe DiMaggio (1948 & 1950) and Mickey Mantle (1955) had reached those levels.
Carl Yastrzemski leads the Red Sox to an 11 – 1 pasting of Seattle by collecting his 506th career double. This moves Yaz past Babe Ruth on the all-time list. Boston has now defeated Seattle 10 straight times.
8/10/1977: In the bottom of the 7th George Scott hit a ball at Fenway Park that struck the center field wall to the right of the vertical yellow line the separates a homer, if it hits to the right of the line, from a ball in play, so it should have been called a home run. Second base umpire Russ Goetz called the ball in play, however. Scott shouted at Goetz as he rounded second and gave the arm twirling motion for a homer. He legged out a triple on the play but might have had an inside the park homer if he had not complained to the umpire. The Boston Red Sox end their nine-game losing streak by walloping a major league-record – since topped – eight home runs, in beating Toronto, 9 – 6 at Fenway Park. Seven of the homers are solo shots, another record. Four home runs (by Fred Lynn, Jim Rice, Carl Yastrzemski and George Scott) come in the 8th inning. Only Scott’s is not consecutive. Lynn and Scott each hit two, while Rice, Yaz, Butch Hobson and Bernie Carbo have one apiece. The Sox’s previous high for homers was six and they won’t top that number until 1999.
Before 54,940 at Yankee Stadium, Roy White launches a dramatic two-out two-run home run in the bottom of the 9th to give the Yanks a 5 – 5 tie with the Red Sox, and New York scores in the next inning on Reggie Jackson’s bases-loaded single to win, 6 – 5. White’s key hit comes after Bill Campbell retires the first two Yankees in the 9th and then Willie Randolph triples to bring up Bobby Murcer. Sparky Lyle picks up the win, handing Boston their first loss in eight games. With homers from Carl Yastrzemski, Butch Hobson and George Scott, the Sox set a major-league record of 33 homers in 10 games.
