1915 – The Phillies get four runs early off Boston Red Sox pitcher Rube Foster in Game 5 of the World Series. The Red Sox break a tie in the 9th inning for the third time in the Series, as Harry Hooper hits his second home run of the game off reliever Eppa Rixey. Boston wins, 5 – 4, to take the Series in five games.
In front of the largest crowd to ever to see a World Series game, 42,300 fans watch the Red Sox beat the Phillies in Game 3 of the Fall Classic, 2-1. The contest, which is played at the National League home of the Braves to accommodate more Boston patrons, ends when Duffy Lewis singles with two outs to score Harry Hopper in the bottom of the ninth inning.

1915 – The Philadelphia Phillies win their first-ever World Series game behind Grover Cleveland Alexander, 3 – 1. Boston Red Sox rookie Babe Ruth grounds out as a pinch hitter in the 9th inning of the opener. Ruth will sit out the rest of the Series, and the Phillies won’t win another game in the Fall Classic until Game 1 of the 1980 World Series.
1915 – In the first of an important four-game series at Fenway Park, the Tigers (90-48) and Red Sox (90-44) square off. Detroit knocks out starter Rube Foster, then rookie reliever Carl Mays keeps throwing at Ty Cobb till he hits the Tiger star on the wrist. Cobb slings his bat at Mays in retaliation, and the crowd reacts by throwing bottles at Cobb. The next inning, Cobb catches a fly ball for the final out and then needs a police escort to leave the field. The Tigers win, 6 – 1.
1915 – Babe Ruth holds the Yankees hitless till the 8th‚ before weakening and giving up 3 hits. Dutch Leonard relieves and the Red Sox win‚ 5 – 2‚ sweeping the doubleheader. Ruth is 2 for 3 at the plate.
At Boston, Smoky Joe Wood fires a 1 – 0 shutout over Washington. The Nationals have lost all 11 games at Fenway Park this year.
1915 – In the first of two games, the Browns cuff Red Sox starter Babe Ruth for four unearned runs in the 3rd, and the young lefty is relieved by Carl Mays. Boston ties the score, 4 – 4, in the 4th, but the Browns eventually win, 9 – 8. In the nitecap, a 1 – 1 tie, George Sisler pitches the last two innings for the Browns.
In Chicago, the Red Sox top the White Sox, 6 – 2, to move back into first place. Boston will win four out of five in the series with their rivals. In the American League, the White Sox spend their last day on top. The Tigers will challenge Boston down the stretch.
