The round-tripper to deep left field at Yankee Stadium marks the first time a black batter has hit a home run off a black pitcher in the history of the Fall Classic.
In an 11-4 win over the Phillies, Dodger pitcher Don Newcombe hits his seventh homer, establishing a National League record for home runs by a pitcher in a season. The victory is Newk’s 20th of the season.
For the sixth consecutive season, Robin Roberts is a 20-game winner. The Phillies right-hander, who will finish the season with a 23-14 record, beats Don Newcombe and the first place Dodgers at Connie Mack Stadium, 3-2.
1955 – With his record at 18-1‚ the Dodgers’ Don Newcombe loses a 1 – 0 game to the Cubs’ Sam Jones. Newk’s two losses have both been to the Cubs.
At Milwaukee’s County Stadium, Stan Musial comes to bat in the bottom of 12th inning of a 5 – 5 All-Star deadlock. American League catcher Yogi Berra complains about his feet hurting and Musial tells him “Don’t worry, I’ll have you home in a minute”… then “the Man” hits a game-winning home run on the next pitch. The American League had taken a five-run lead on a three-run homer by Mickey Mantle off Robin Roberts, only to see the NL tie it. Braves P Gene Conley strikes out the side in the 12th to get credit for the win.
On May 30, 1955, Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe hits two home runs in a 10-8 victory over the New York Giants. Just four days earlier, the hot-hitting Newcombe tripled, stole home and picked up a pair of RBIs against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
With Jim Gilliam (2B), Jackie Robinson (3B), Sandy Amoros (LF), Roy Campanella (C) and Don Newcombe (P) in the starting lineup against the Braves, the Dodgers field the first team which consists of a majority of black players. The historic five helps Brooklyn beat Milwaukee at County Stadium, 2 – 1.
