On May 6, 1982, Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry enters the exclusive 300-win circle by beating the New York Yankees, 7-3, at the Seattle Kingdome. The Seattle Mariners’ right-hander becomes the 15th pitcher and first pitcher to notch his 300th win since Early Wynn of the Indians in 1963.

1978 – Gaylord Perry of the San Diego Padres becomes the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues. Perry cops the National League honor with a 21-6 record and a 2.72 ERA.
Eventual NL Cy Young Award winner Gaylord Perry becomes the third major league pitcher, joining Walter Johnson (1923) and Bob Gibson (1974), to record 3,000 career strikeouts. The 40 year-old future Hall of Fame right-hander fans Joe Simpson, who will later become better known as a Braves’ broadcaster, in the eighth inning to reach the milestone, and will strike out the LA left fielder again in the tenth to finish the season with 3001.
On January 25, 1978, the San Diego Padres acquire well-traveled pitcher Gaylord Perry from the Texas Rangers. The Padres surrender pitcher Dave Tomlin and $125,000 in cash. Perry will win 21 games for the Padres in 1978 and capture the Cy Young Award.
