In the New York Giants home opener, 25,000 fans watch the Brooklyn Superbas take a 2 – 1 lead into the 9th inning against Christy Mathewson. But in the bottom, with Fred Tenney on first base, Mike Donlin hits a walk-off home run to give the Giants a 3 – 2 win.
1907 – Christy Mathewson shuts out the Pirates, 2 – 0, while Bill Klem continues his battle with the Giants by tossing four more, including John McGraw.
At the Polo Grounds, Hooks Wiltse edges the Reds for a 4 – 3 Giants win. Christy Mathewson preserves the win with a scoreless 9th.
Battling for second place, the Pirates defeat the Giants, 2 – 0, pinning the loss on Christy Mathewson. The Giants announce that Tommy Corcoran, the 38-year-old veteran whom the Giants picked up before the season started, has been handed his release.
On April 11, 1907, Roger Bresnahan of the New York Giants plays the Opening Day game wearing leg guards usually used in cricket-the first shin guards in major league history. The leg guards come in handy, protecting Bresnahan from a fifth-inning foul tip. Other catchers will follow Bresnahan’s lead and wear similar shin guards.
The Cubs pound the Giants twice to complete a three-game sweep in New York. Chicago wins the opener, 6 – 2, then jumps on Christy Mathewson for 16 hits and 10 runs to win, 10 – 5, in eight innings. Jimmy Sheckard has four hits off Matty.
1906 – The Pirates edge the Giants and Christy Mathewson, 2 – 1, plating both runs on walks.
The Giants slow the Chicago express, stopping the Cubs, 7 – 4, behind Christy Mathewson and Hooks Wiltse. New York is just 4 1/2 games behind Chicago, but the Cubs will go 50-8 from August 1 to outdistance the pack.
The Cubs beat back the Giants, 6 – 2, as Three-Finger Brown tops Christy Mathewson. Joe Tinker’s two-run homer in the 6th is the big blow for Chicago. The loss drops the Giants to 6 games behind the Cubs.
At Robison Field, the New York Giants clip the St. Louis Cardinals, 5 – 1 and 4 – 0, with the help of two additions to the lineup. Cy Seymour, last year’s near Triple Crown winner, is a new addition from the Cincinnati Reds for $12,000. Seymour was with the Giants from 1896to 1900 as a pitcher and outfielder, and in 1905 led the National League in batting, RBIs, slugging percentage, and was 2nd in homers (8). Cy has four hits for the Giants today. The other addition is Spike Shannon, who moves over from the Cardinal dugout in exchange for Sam Mertesand Doc Marshall. Spike has three hits and two runs in the opener. Christy Mathewson wins the nitecap, shutting out the Birds on six hits.
