Rookie Whitey Ford tosses a six-hitter to give the Yankees the rubber game in Detroit, 8 – 1, and move them back into first place. Joe DiMaggio hits his 30th homer and the Yanks score seven runs in the 9th as Ford drives to his seventh win without a loss. The Red Sox will follow the Yankees into Detroit and sweep three from the Tigers.
Johnny Mize hits three home runs in one game for the sixth time in his career, establishing a major league record. The first baseman’s offensive output, which makes him the second player to accomplish a three-homer game in both leagues along with Babe Ruth, isn’t enough when the Yankees lose at Detroit, 9-7.
In Detroit, Vic Raschi posts his 20th win of the season to give New York a hard-fought 7 – 5 win. Raschi walks in two runs in the opening inning as Detroit tallies four runs, but New York comes back as Joe DiMaggio cracks his 29th home run and Johnny Mize follows a walk to Hank Bauer with his 10th homer. New York takes over first place by a half game.
The Yankees blow a 6-run lead as Cleveland scores four in the 9th inning off Allie Reynolds to win, 8 – 7. Luke Easter’s 3-run home run – his second of the game – is the big blow, as the Yankees skid to second place, a half game behind Detroit and a half game ahead of Boston.

1950 – Yankee rookie Whitey Ford wins his first major league game, beating the visiting White Sox, 4 – 3. Tom Ferrick finishes for New York.
Eleven home runs – a major league record – drive in all the runs scored in a 10 – 9 Tiger win over the Yankees before 51,000 Detroit fans. Detroit has four home runs in the 4th inning as Dizzy Trout, Jerry Priddy, Vic Wertz and Hoot Evers connect. Pitcher Trout’s home run, off Tommy Byrne, is his second lifetime grand slam. Evers hits another home run, an inside-the-park two-run game winner in the 9th off Joe Page to win it. For New York, Hank Bauer connects for two homers, including one in the 4th inning. Joe DiMaggio, Jerry Coleman, Yogi Berra and pinch hitter Tommy Henrich also belt round trippers. It is the first time that nine different players connect for homers in a game.
On June 21, 1950 Joe DiMaggio gets his 2,000th hit, a 7th-inning single off the Indians’ Marino Pieretti, as the Yanks win, 8 – 2. DiMaggio joins Luke Appling and Wally Moses as the only active players with 2,000 or more hits. Eddie Lopat is the winning pitcher, running his record against Cleveland to 25-6….
1950 – New York Yankees pitcher Vic Raschi, troubled by the new rule that requires a one-second stop before delivery with men on base, balks four times in one game, a club record and two fewer than the single-season record. Nevertheless, Raschi wins, 4 – 3, over the Chicago White Sox. He will finish the season with six balks to tie the since-topped American League mark.
At Fenway Park, Commissioner Happy Chandler gives Ted Williams his American League MVP Award, and then Governor Paul Dever tosses out the first ball. To the delight of 31,822 fans, Boston rips New York Yankees starter Allie Reynolds with a five-run 4th inning to drive him from the game and take a 9 – 0 lead. But the Yankees score four runs in the 6th off Mel Parnell and then, down 10 – 4, unload for nine runs in the 8th. Billy Martin becomes the first player in major league history to get two base hits in one inning in his first game. He doubles against Parnell in his first at-bat in the 8th inning, and then singles off Al Papai. Walt Masterson gives up Tommy Henrich’s second triple of the game before giving way to four more Boston pitchers. Boo Ferriss, pitching in his last game, allows the last two runs in the 9th inning as the Yankees chalk up a 15 – 10 victory, the biggest blown lead the Red Sox have ever had at Fenway Park; on June 4, 1989, they’ll blow a 10-run lead at home. Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Vern Stephens, and Bobby Doerreach have three hits. Don Johnson is the winning pitcher, his last victory for New York, with Joe Page pitching a perfect 8th and 9th innings in relief.
