The Cubs trade 48-year old veteran knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm to the Braves for minor league first baseman Hal Breeden.
The White Sox trade OF Ken Berry to the Angels for OF Jay Johnstone in a six-player deal. The White Sox also make a rare trade with the Cubs when they send OF Jose Ortiz and infielder Ossie Blanco to the North side for pitchers Pat Jacquez and Dave Lemonds.
The Cubs give up on pitcher Ray Culp and ship him to the Red Sox for minor leaguer Rudy Schlesinger and cash. A steal for the Sox, Culp will develop a palmball and win 64 games for them over the next four seasons.
The Yankees purchase Gene Michael from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
1965 – The Red Sox trade shortstop Eddie Bressoud to the Mets for outfielder Joe Christopher.
1962 – Righthander Don Nottebart is purchased from the Milwaukee Braves on the advice of ex-teammate Don McMahon. Nottebart’s three-year record in Houston is 21-34, including the franchise’s first no-hitter. Infielders Norm Larker and Joey Amalfitano are also traded in two separate deals for four players who do not make Houston’s roster. Larker is swapped to the Braves while Amalfitano is shipped to the Giants.
The White Sox trade pitchers Don Larsen and Billy Pierce to the Giants for pitchers Eddie Fisher, Dom Zanni, Verle Tiefenthaler and first baseman Bob Farley.
Cubs outfielder Billy Williams (.278, 25, 86) is selected as the National League Rookie of the Year. Braves catcher Joe Torre and Cubs southpaw Jack Curtis also receive consideration for the honor.
The Orioles trade P Billy Loes and Billy O’Dell to the Giants for P Gordon Jones, OF Jackie Brandt, and C Roger McCardell. O’Dell will win 56 games for the Giants.
