1988 – Former player Art Howe is named as manager of the Astros. He’s the third Astro skipper in a row to make Houston their first big league managerial spot. Howe indicates he’ll be able to lead in spite of players on the roster who were his teammates in days gone by.

The New York Yankees trade pitcher Kenny Rogers to the Oakland Athletics for a player to be named later and cash considerations. Oakland will send third baseman Scott Brosius to the Yankees on November 18th to complete the trade.

 MLB signs a $1.7 billion, five-year deal with FOX, NBC, ESPN and Liberty Media. 

For a bit less money paid by CBS for the rights to televise the 1990-1993 seasons of big league games, Major League Baseball comes to an agreement with the Fox Broadcasting Company to air regular season contests on Saturday afternoons. Similar to the format used by The Baseball Network, Fox will offer weekly regionalized telecasts based solely on a viewer’s geography.

Receiving all of the writers’ 28 first-place votes, Indian backstop Sandy Alomar, Jr. wins the AL Rookie of the Year, joining Carlton Fisk and Mark McGwire as the only freshmen to be elected unanimously. Yankee first baseman/DH Kevin Maas and Royals right-hander Kevin Appier are the runners-up.
