On April 2, 1982, Oakland A’s pitcher Steve McCatty walks to the plate during a spring training game carrying a 15-inch toy bat. A’s manager Billy Martin had ordered McCatty to use the toy bat as a protest of the rule preventing the use of the DH in National League ballparks. Umpire Jim Quick refuses to let McCatty use the bat.
1981 – Pitchers Dave Righetti, Ron Davis and Goose Gossage combine on a 4 – 0 shutout of the Oakland Athletics in Game 3 of the ALCS to give the New York Yankees their 33rd American League pennant.
In Game 1 of the ALDS in Kansas City, Mike Norris throws a six-hit complete game, blanking the Royals, 4-0. Oakland’s appearance in the playoffs makes Billy Martin the first skipper in baseball history to manage four franchises (Twins-1969, Tigers-1972, A’s-1981, and Yankees 1976-78) into postseason play.
On April 25, 1981, Seattle Mariners manager Maury Wills is suspended for two games as punishment for ordering the grounds crew to enlarge the batter’s boxes at the Kingdome. Wills had decided to tamper with the chalk lines after the Oakland A’s complained that Seattle’s Tom Paciorek repeatedly stepped out of the batter’s box while hitting.
On April 19, 1981, the Oakland Athletics set a modern day record for the most consecutive wins to start a season. Billy Martin’s A’s defeat the Seattle Mariners, 6-1, giving them their 11th straight victory. The Atlanta Braves will surpass the mark a year later by opening the season with 13 consecutive wins.
Brian Kingman loses his 20th game when the A’s are defeated by the White Sox at the Oakland Coliseum, 6-4. The 26 year-old right-hander, who will win his next decision to finish the season with an 8-20 record, will become the last 20-game loser of this century, and the first to hurl for a winning team since Dolf Luque posted a 13-23 mark for the 1922 second-place Reds.
