On October 3, 2004.00 On the last day of the season, Blue Jays television announcer John Cerutti is found dead in his SkyDome hotel room. The death of the 44 year-old Albany, N.Y. native, who was a former big league pitcher, is due to natural causes with foul play not being suspected.
1993 – In the World Series, a five-run uprising in the 3rd inning pushes the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6 – 4 victory over Toronto in Game 2. Closer Mitch Williams earns his only save of the Series.
Cal Ripken Jr.’s three-run home run lifts the American League to a 4 – 2 win over the National League in the annual All-Star Game. Andre Dawson homers for the NLers who lose for the 4th straight year. Ripken, who also won the pre-All-Star Game Home Run Derby, is named the game’s MVP. Tony LaRussa becomes the first manager with three straight All-Star victories.
The Blue Jays set a major league single-season attendance record as 49,902 watch the home team beat the Yankees, 6-4. Toronto will finish the season with 58 consecutive sell-outs at the Sky Dome with a total attendance of 3,885,284.
At the SkyDome in Toronto, George Bush becomes the first U.S. president to throw the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day in Canada. After the international toss, the Blue Jays beat the visiting Rangers, 2-1.
1989 – The Toronto SkyDome opens, but the Blue Jays lose 5 – 3 to the Milwaukee Brewers. Baseball’s newest and most modern stadium features a $100 million fully retractable roof, a hotel, the world’s largest video display board, and a Hard Rock Cafe.
