President Barack Obama awards the Presidential Medal of Freedom to broadcaster Vin Scully, the voice of the Dodgers for the past 67 seasons. The recently retired play-by-play announcer joins other baseball notables, including Hank Aaron, Moe Berg, Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente, Ted Williams, and Stan Musial, to have received the nationâs highest civilian honor.
Itâs an eventful afternoon at New Yankee Stadium as the Yankees defeat the Tigers, 5 â 4. First, Alex Rodriguez hits his first homer of the year off Justin Verlander in the 2nd and in the process passes Stan Musial for 5th place on the all-time RBI list with 1,951. Then, leading off the 4th, Alfonso Soriano also goes deep off Verlander, for the 2,000th hit of his career. The Yankees hand a 4 â 2 lead to Mariano Rivera in the top of the 9th, but for the third straight time, Mariano blows the opportunity by allowing solo homers to Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez. However, Brett Gardner homers in turn, off JosĂ© Veras with two outs in the bottom of the inning, ending the game.

Sports Illustrated names Derek Jeter as its Sportsman of the Year, making the âCaptainâ the first Yankee honored by the magazine. The other baseball recipients to win the award, given annually since SIâs inception in 1954, include Johnny Podres (Dodgers â 1955), Stan Musial (Cardinals â 1957), Sandy Koufax (Dodgers â 1965), Tom Seaver (Mets â 1969), Pete Rose (Reds â 1975), Orel Hershiser (Dodgers â 1988), Cal Ripken Jr. (Orioles â 1995), Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa (Cardinals, Cubs â 1998), Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling (Diamondbacks â 2001), and the entire Red Sox team (2004).
2001 â San Francisco Giants left fielder Barry Bonds is named National League Most Valuable Player by the Baseball Writers Association of America with 30 of 32 first-place votes. Bonds, who hit .328 with an all-time record 73 home runs and 137 RBI, wins the award for an unprecedented fourth time. Previously, he was awarded as a Pittsburgh Pirates member in 1990 and 1992 and with the Giants in 1993. Three-time MVP Award winners include Yogi Berra, Roy Campanella, Joe DiMaggio, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Stan Musial and Mike Schmidt, all of them Hall of Famers.
