DeGrom, who had been an infielder his first couple of years in college before becoming a pitcher, also pitches very well, allowing 1 run in 7 innings, but is a hard-luck loser, 1 – 0, as Whitley, Dellin Betances, Adam Warren and David Robertson combine on a three-hit shutout. Whitley, who is also making his big league debut, gives up no runs in 4 2/3 innings and also collects his first hit, off deGrom.
