November 4, 1881

1884 – Pitcher Tony Mullane violates an oral agreement to sign with the St. Louis Browns by signing a $5,000 contract with the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The American Association suspends Mullane for the 1885 season and fines him $1,000, but allows him to remain with Cincinnati. Over the next eight years Mullane will win 163 games with the Reds on his way to a career total of 285 victories.

November 4, 1887

1887 – The Washington Statesmen sell veteran outfielder Paul Hines to the Indianapolis Hoosiers for $5,000.

November 4, 1889

After a formal meeting of representatives from all National League chapters, the Brotherhood issues a “Manifesto” in which it claims that “players have been bought, sold and exchanged as though they were sheep instead of American citizens.

November 4, 1891

1891 – Charlie Comiskey, having had enough of St. Louis Browns owner Chris Von der Ahe, signs as the manager and team captain of the National League’s Cincinnati Reds.

November 4, 1899

1899 – Representatives of seven cities meet in New York regarding the proposed new American Association. Attention focuses on what other city might become the eighth franchise. The plans to revive the circuit will come to naught.

November 4, 1912

1912 – Miller Huggins is named manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, beginning his 17-year career as a skipper.

November 4, 1935

NFL standout Cal Hubbard becomes an American League umpire

Jake Powell Kills Himself; ’36 Series Star

November 4, 1953

Eddie Joost succeeds Jimmy Dykes as the manager of the Philadelphia Athletics

November 4, 1957

With a new balk rule, an option now includes keeping the ball in play after the call is made

 Ernie Banks wins his second National League MVP Award in a row

November 4, 1963

The Cardinals trade outfielder George Altman and pitcher Bill Wakefield to the Mets for veteran right-hander Roger Craig

November 4, 1965

Al Lopez resigns as the manager of the White Sox

November 4, 1966

Maury Wills leaves the Los Angeles Dodgers club touring in Japan, complaining that his injured right knee needs immediate treatment

November 4, 1975

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer wins his second Cy Young Award

November 4, 1976

Three Future Hall of Famers are featured in The first mass-market free agent re-entry draft is held at the New York Plaza Hotel.

November 4, 1977

1977 – The second free agent re-entry draft is held at the New York Plaza Hotel. Big names include Lyman Bostock, Goose Gossage, Larry Hisle, Mike Torrez and Oscar Gamble.

November 4, 1978

In the third annual free agent re-entry draft Pete Rose, Tommy John and Darrell Evans are the biggest names among the eligible players.

November 4, 1980

Steve Carlton of the Philadelphia Phillies joins Sandy Koufax, Tom Seaver and Jim Palmer, as pitchers with three Cy Young Awards. Carlton garners all but one of the 24 first-place votes to take National League honors. He posted a 24-9 record with a 2.34 ERA and a league-leading 286 strikeouts.

November 4, 1980

Japan’s all-time home run hitter, Sadaharu Oh, retires from professional baseball. The Tokyo Yomiuri Giants’ first baseman hit a record 868 home runs in his 22-year playing career.

November 4, 1981

The Cincinnati Reds trade outfielder Ken Griffey to the New York Yankees for pitcher Fred Toliver and minor leaguer Brian Ryder. Griffey was about to become a free agent.

November 4, 1981

The Philadelphia Phillies announce that Pat Corrales will be the club manager next season, replacing Dallas Green, who quit to become the Chicago Cubs’ general manager.

November 4, 1982

1982 – New York Yankees coach Mike Ferraro lands his first major league managing job, signing a two-year contract to lead the Cleveland Indians. He will be fired before the end of the season.

November 4, 1987

 San Diego Padres catcher Benito Santiago, who ended the season with a rookie-record 34-game hitting streak, is a unanimous selection as the National League Rookie of the Year.

November 4, 1993

1993 – Cleveland Indians pitcher Cliff Young is killed in a truck crash in Willis, Texas. He is the third Indians pitcher to die this year in an accident.

November 4, 1996

1996 – The Angels name Terry Collins as their new manager.

November 4, 1997

1997 – Third baseman Scott Rolen is the unanimous choice for the 1997 National League Rookie of the Year Award and becomes the first Philadelphia Phillies player to win the award since Dick Allen in 1964. Rolen led all NL rookies in batting average (.283), home runs (21), runs batted in (92), runs (93), hits (159), doubles (35), total bases (263), on-base percentage (.377) and slugging average (.469). He barely qualified as a rookie, logging exactly 130 at bats in 1996 before breaking his wrist on September 7th when he was hit by a pitch. One more at bat would have disqualified him for the award this year.

The Milwaukee Brewers hire Davey Lopes as their new manager.

November 4, 1999

Larry Dolan agrees to buy the Cleveland Indians from Richard Jacobs for $320 million. The sale is subject to approval by major league owners. If approved, the deal will be a record for a baseball franchise. The O’Malley family sold the Dodgers to the FOX division of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation for $311 million in 1998.

Arizona Diamondbacks win their first World Series championship

November 4, 2002

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Eric Hinske, who posted a .279 batting average with 24 home runs and 84 RBI, is named American League Rookie of the Year. Hinske receives 19 of 28 first-place votes cast by the Baseball Writers Association of America with Baltimore Orioles pitcher Rodrigo López getting the other 9 first-place votes.

November 4, 2002

Pitcher Jason Jennings, who had a 16-6 record with a 4.52 ERA, becomes first member of the Colorado Rockies to be selected by the BBWAA as the National League Rookie of the Year. Jennings receives 27 first-place votes from the 32 writers participating in the balloting. Brad Wilkerson of the Montreal Expos is the runner-up.

November 4, 2002

Colorado Rockies right-hander Jason Jennings (16-6, 4.52) becomes the first member of the Rockies to be selected by the BBWAA as the National League Rookie of the Year. The 24 year-old right-hander receives 27 first-place votes from the 32 writers participating in the balloting.

November 4, 2003

Former Yankee captain Don Mattingly is named as the Bronx Bombers’ hitting coach, replacing Rick Down, who did not have his contract renewed last week. The 42 year-old, who retired due to back problems, will be a top candidate to replace Joe Torre as manager in 2005.

November 4, 2003

Miami-Dade County Commissioners approved a plan committing $73 million in tax money toward a new major league ballpark for the Marlins. The World Champions, who have agreed to change their name to the Miami Marlins if the city builds the ballpark, want to begin playing in the $325 million new park in 2007, but still don’t have a plan for raising $137 million needed as part of their commitment.

November 4, 2004

Philadelphia names Charlie Manuel as the team’s new manager, replacing Larry Bowa, who was fired at the end of the season after the much-favored Phillies failed to make the postseason. The former Cleveland skipper compiled a 220-190 (.537) record and won a division during his three years with the Tribe.

November 4, 2004

The Mets introduced Willie Randolph as the franchise’s 18th manager. The long-time Yankee second baseman and third base coach becomes the first black to manage in New York.

November 4, 2005

The Yankees continue to makeover their coaching staff when Ron Guidry, a former three-time 20-game winner, is named to replace Mel Stottlemyre as the team’s pitching coach, and former Red Sox skipper Joe Kerrigan joins the team as its bullpen coach. Earlier in the week, former big league managers Larry Bowa (third base coach), Lee Mazzilli (bench coach), and Tony Pena (first base coach) also are added to Joe Torre’s staff.

November 4, 2008

Barack Obama, a long-time White Sox fan, is elected as the 44th president of the United States. The junior senator from Illinois, the first African-American to become the nation’s Commander-in-Chief, is friendly with the team’s general manager Kenny Williams, also a prominent member of Chicago’s black community.

November 4, 2009

In Game 6 of the Fall Classic, the Yankees captured their 27th World Championship and their first since 2000, with a 7-3 decision over the Phillies, the defending champs. Hideki Matsui, New York’s designated hitter, collects six RBIs, tying a World Series mark, and Andy Pettitte became the second pitcher to get the victory in all three postseason-clinching games, joining Derek Lowe, who accomplished the feat with Boston in 2004.

Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson dies in Thousand Oaks, California at 76. Nicknamed “Captain Hook” for his tendency to remove his starting pitchers early in the game – now standard practice – he was the first manager to win over 100 games in a season in both leagues, and the first to lead teams from both leagues to World Championships, doing so with Cincinnati in 1975 and 1976, and with Detroit in 1984.

November 4, 2010

Less than a week after being named the World Series MVP, Edgar Renteria is let go by the San Francisco Giants, who buy out his option for next season. Bothered by frequent injuries over recent years, Renteria is contemplating retirement but will come back to play for the Cincinnati Reds in 2011.

November 4, 2010

Instead of negotiating a new multiyear contract with their designated hitter, the Red Sox decide to exercise their $12.5 million option on 34 year-old David Ortiz for the upcoming season. ‘Big Papi,’ who would have preferred a long-term contract, led Boston with 32 homers along with 102 RBIs.

November 4, 2011

Jim Thome returns to the Phillies, inking a $1.25 million, one-year contract with the team as a free agent. The 41 year-old slugger, who hit .256 with 15 homers that included his 600th career round-tripper with the Twins and the Indians last season, had successfully completed three seasons of his six-year $85 million deal in his first stint with the club before being traded the White Sox in 2005 for Aaron Rowand and two southpaw pitching prospects, Gio Gonzalez and Daniel Haigwood.

The recently retired Mariano Rivera is named the Comeback Player of the Year in the American League, while Francisco Liriano wins the award in the National League. Liriano had won in the 2010 AL and becomes the second player to win it in each loop, after Rick Sutcliffe.

The Mets and Clear Channel Media and Entertainment announce the launch of a five-year multimedia marketing partnership. WOR (710 AM) will become the team’s flagship radio station, replacing WFAN (660 AM), which will now be broadcasting Yankee games after carrying the Amazins’ for the past 26 years.

November 4, 2014

Winners of the Gold Glove Awards in Major League Baseball are announced. In the National League, C Yadier Molina of the Cardinals is a winner for the seventh straight year, while in the American League, the Orioles and Royals combine to claim six of the nine awards.

November 4, 2016

Five million fans turn out for the Cubs’ World Series victory parade in downtown Chicago, IL, 108 years in the making. The Chicago River is dyed in blue to celebrate the long-awaited title.

November 4, 2016

The Diamondbacks hire Torey Lovullo as their new manager. It is his first official managing job in the majors, but he filled in ably with the Red Sox when John Farrell was fighting cancer during the second half of 2015.

November 4, 2016

Eddie Carnett, the Oldest Living MLB Player dies in Ringling, OK, a couple of weeks after turning 100. His title passes on to 98-year-old Hall of Famer Bobby Doerr.

November 4, 2018

2018 – Winners of the Gold Glove Award are announced. C Yadier Molina wins his 9th and LF Alex Gordon and 3B Nolan Arenado both win their 6th. There are also six first-time winners, including 1B Freddie Freeman who ends up in a rare, but not unprecedented, tie with Anthony Rizzo.
