Howard Johnson, who will turn 33 at the end of the month, becomes the first free agent to sign with another team this off-season when he agrees to a one-year deal worth $2,100,000 to play for the Rockies. The switch-hitting slugger, who led the National League in homers and RBIs two years ago, has seen his production drop in recent seasons, primarily due to injuries.
The Montreal Expos acquire starting pitcher Pedro Martinez from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for second baseman Delino DeShields.
San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds is voted the National League MVP for the third time in four years. He joins Stan Musial, Roy Campanella and Mike Schmidt as the National League’s only three-time MVPs. In his first year in San Francisco, Bonds reached career highs with a .336 batting average, 46 home runs, 129 runs and 123 RBI to help the Giants to 103 wins, although the team missed the NL West division title by one game.

The Dodger catcher is the first player to hit over .300 (.318), connect for more than 30 homers (35), and drive in at least 100 runs (112) in the Senior Circuit as a freshman since Wally Berger accomplished the feat in his initial major league season with the Braves in 1930.
1993 – Devon White’s two-run triple caps a six-run 8th inning as Toronto rallies for a 15 – 14 victory over the Phillies and a 3-1 World Series lead. The 29 runs shatter the Series record of 22 set in Game 2 of the 1936 Series, when the Yankees beat the 1936 Giants, 18 – 4. It is also the longest nine-inning game in series history at 4 hours, 14 minutes.
