On May 15, 2008, Milwaukee outfielder Ryan Braun signed a record-setting deal. Braun inked an eight-year, $45 million contract, making him the highest paid player in franchise history. More importantly, Braun became the first player with less than a year of major league service to sign such a long or valuable deal.
2008 – Lance Berkman’s incredible month continues during a 6-3 win at San Francisco. He hits a two-run homer to give him a majors-leading 14. He also leads the National League in RBIs (40), runs (43) and OPS (1.264). He’s batting .580 for the month and his current batting average (.388) is second overall. Miguel Tejada and Brad Ausmus drive in the other runs. The next day, Berkman homers into McCovey Cove to complete an 8-7 comeback. Houston has won 18 of their last 24 after a 6-12 start.
5/11/2008 – In the top of the ninth, after a double switch, the Reds batted out of order when David Ross hit in Corey Patterson’s spot. Ross flew out to right and then Mets Manager Willie Randolph told the umpires about the issue. Patterson was called out instead of Ross and Ross batted again and singled. Randolph should have taken the out and kept quiet.
On May 6, 2008, Gavin Floyd of the White Sox carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning before losing it on a double by Joe Mauer of the Twins. It’s the second time in the month that Floyd went at least 7 1/3 innings without allowing a hit.
