At Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field, NBC televises the first major league game in history on experimental station W2XBS, covering a doubleheader split in which the Reds win the first game, 5-2, and the Dodgers take the nightcap, 6-1. The network employs two cameras, one behind home plate, showing a wide view of the field, and the other on the third base line to capture the plays at first base.
Rookie Ted Williams goes 4 for 5, including his first major-league home run, but the Boston Red Sox lose to the Philadelphia Athletics, 12 – 8, at Fenway Park.
On July 5, 1937, Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees hits his first career grand slam. The blast, his 20th of the season, comes in the sixth inning against George “Rube” Walberg of the Boston Red Sox, and helps the Yankees to an 8-4 win and a sweep of their doubleheader.
On April 27, 1937, Cardinals’ trainer Doc Weaver uses a video camera to record his team in action during a practice. Manager Frankie Frisch later uses the film to work with his players on their fundamentals. It’s one of the earliest uses of video for training purposes in the major leagues.

1927 – Mel Ott, 18 years old, hits his first major-league home run, an inside-the-park round-tripper. It is the only inside-the-park homer he will hit of his 511 career homers.
