Minnie Minoso is dealt to the White Sox by the Indians as part of a three-team trade that also involves the A’s. Dave Philley, Gus Zernial, Paul Lehner, Lou Brissie, Ray Murray, and Sam Zoldak will be the other players also changing their uniforms in the seven-player deal.

August 24, 1952

8/24/1952 – After losing the first game of a doubleheader, the Philadelphia Athletics started the second game confused. Eddie Joost struck out and Ferris Fain doubled to left. Dave Philley then walked although he was listed in the fifth spot in the order not third. Gus Zernial doubled, bringing White Sox manager Paul Richards out of the dugout. According to the official lineup, Cass Michaels followed Philley. After a 15-minute delay while the umpires read the rule book, Michaels was declared out and Zernial’s double was eliminated. However, the Athletics still won the game, 5-1.

May 21, 1956

The White Sox send 3B George Kell, OF Bob Nieman, and pitchers Mike Fornieles and Connie Johnson to the Orioles for P Jim Wilson and OF Dave Philley. Kell will play solid 3B until Brooks Robinson is ready, while Johnson will lead the Birds’ starters in wins in 1957.

On the last day of the season, Dave Philley establishes a big-league record by getting his eighth consecutive pinch hit. The seventh inning run-producing double helps the Phillies beat the Pirates at Forbes Field, 6-4.

Dave Philley, with his twenty-first pinch hit of the season, breaks an American League record, set by Ed Coleman of the Browns in 1936. The 41 year-old Texan, coming off the bench to hit for Dick Williams in the eighth inning, sets the new pinch hitting mark when he doubles to right field in the Orioles’ 8-0 win over Kansas City at Memorial Stadium.

August 23, 1961

Dave Philley ties Sam Leslie’s 29 year-old major league record with his 22nd pinch hit of the season. The historic moment occurs in an Orioles 7-5 extra-inning victory over the A’s as the 41 year-old singles in the top of the 7th pinch hitting for Hoyt Wilhelm at Municipal Stadium.

August 25, 1961

In the Orioles’ 5 – 2 win over the Twins, Oriole Dave Philley sets a major-league record for pinch hits. His swinging bunt down the third base line is his 23rd hit, breaking the record set by the Giants’ Sam Leslie in 1932. Phillips is 23 for 63 this season.

Biography

Endowed with excellent speed and a fine arm, Philley led AL outfielders in assists three different years. But he is best remembered for his pinch hitting in the late 1950s. In 1958 the switch-hitter had a league-high 18 hits off the Phillies’ bench, including eight consecutive pinch hits to end the season. On Opening Day of 1959, he poked a pinch double, establishing a record of nine straight successful pinch-hit appearances. In 1961 Philley collected an AL record of 24 pinch hits with Baltimore. Overall, he hit .299 (93-for-311) off the bench.
