1942 – Variety, the weekly entertainment magazine, wades in against “droopy drawers”. “Joe DiMaggio and Carl Hubbell are the silliest looking pair we’ve seen. Way back in the days when the speed boys were stealing 40 to 90 bases a year, you’ll remember they used to roll their pants just below the knee. Now they’ve got ’em almost to their shoes. The theory here is that the constriction inherent in the new style can slow a player a full stride getting to first.”

Due to the fear of a Japanese attack, west coast military leaders ask the Pacific Coast League to limit crowds to 3,000 fans.

In the final game of his twentieth and last full season, Ted Lyons beats the Indians, going the distance in the White Sox’ 3-1 victory at Cleveland’s League Park. The 41 year-old ‘Sunday Teddy,’ although exempt from the draft due to his age enlists in the U.S. Marine Corps after the season and fights in the Pacific during WW II, completes all of his twenty games, all started on Sundays, posting a 14-6 record along with an ERA of 2.10.

5/5/1942 – With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Frankie Gustine of the Pirates singled to CF. When Braves manager Casey Stengel pointed out that Stu Martin should have batted, Martin was called out and Gustine taken off the base. While Martin was on the lineup card given to the home plate umpire, Gustine had taken his place in the field when the game started. That made him an unannounced substitution and properly in the lineup. The umpire’s ruling thus was incorrect. However, the Pirates should have pointed out that Gustine was the proper batter.

May 8, 1942

At Ebbets Field, in the first twilight game in 24 years, the Dodgers top the Giants, 7 – 6, with Dolph Camilli’s 7th-inning home run onto Bedford Avenue the big blow. With more than 24,000 fans on hand, nearly $60,000 is raised for the Navy Relief Fund, as all the proceeds are donated. Everyone, including the ballplayers and umps, pay their way into the park.

May 10, 1942

1942 – The Reds’ Ray Starr and Bucky Walters both pitch shutouts over the Cardinals. Starr wins the opener, 1 – 0, allowing nine hits, and Bucky coasts, 3 – 0, on a 4-hitter.

Ted Williams is sworn into the U.S. Navy, but will remain with the Red Sox until he is called for active duty.

Earlier in the year, a public outcry occurred when the Boston outfielder asked to be reclassified from Class 1-A to 3-A, due to being the sole support of his mother, causing the Quaker Oats Company to drop him from their ads.

May 29, 1942

New York’s Lefty Gomez‚ self-described as the worst-hitting pitcher in baseball‚ bangs out 4 hits in pitching a four-hit‚ 16 – 1 victory over Washington. They are his last major league hits. Buddy Hassett adds 4 hits as well.

1942 – Muskogee (Western Association) OF Allen McElreath is declared permanently ineligible by minor league head George Trautman for attempting to induce a teammate to throw a game.

The visiting Giants‚ behind Bill Lohrman‚ top the Reds‚ 3 – 1. The Reds’ only run is a homer by prized rookie catcher Ray Lamanno‚ one of five Reds hits. Lonny Frey has three singles. Lamanno’s homer‚ his 7th‚ lands on the roof of a laundry across the street from the left field wall. The Giants also make five hits in beating Junior Thompson.

For the first and only time in a career that spans 1,787 contests, Joe DiMaggio strikes out three times in a game. Indians’ hurler Mel Harder does the deed in the Tribe’s 5-4 victory over the Yankees at Cleveland Stadium.

Ted Lyons wins his 250th career game, 6 – 5, over the Red Sox. A week later, he will beat New York’s Red Ruffing to match the Yankee hurler’s 251 career wins. The White Sox veteran will finish the season with 20 complete games in 20 starts, lead the AL with a 2.10 ERA, then enter the Marine Corps at age 42.

July 4, 1942

In the 8th inning of an 8 – 4 Negro National League victory over the Newark Eagles at Yankee Stadium, Baltimore Elite Giants spitball ace Bill Byrd beans Eagles manager Willie Wells. Wells is carried from the field, and the incident causes him to design a batting helmet. When he steps into the batter’s box in a few days, he will be wearing a modified construction worker’s hardhat.

Peanuts “Nyassas” Davis pitches and bats the Cincinnati Clowns to a 7 – 4 victory over the Baltimore Grays in the new Negro Major League. Davis’s receiver, Pepper Bassett, catches the last inning in a rocking chair.

Clyde McCullough hits three consecutive home runs, but the Chicago Cubs lose, 4 – 3, to the Philadelphia Phillies.

1942 – The New York Daily Worker announces that Pittsburgh Pirates owner Bill Benswanger will arrange a tryout for Negro League players Roy Campanella, Sammy T. Hughes, and David Barnhill. In August, Campanella and Hughes will jump their team during a tight pennant race to “showcase” for the major leagues.

The Dodgers (71-29) top Johnny Schmitz of the Cubs, 9 – 6, to stretch their lead to nine games over St. Louis.

August 2, 1942

Carl Hubbell wins his 5th straight, topping the Cardinals, 7 – 1. Mel Ott’s two homers, one a grand slam eases the way for the veteran. In the nightcap, Dick Bartell’s 9th-inning error paves the way for a squeeze bunt, and the Cards win, 3 – 2. Mort Cooper allows four hits in winning his 13th.

August 2, 1942

At Detroit, the Tigers sweep a pair from the Red Sox, 8 – 4 and 6 – 2, to knock Boston out of 2nd place. Dizzy Trout wins the opener, helping himself with a 3-run home run. Virgil Trucks wins the nitecap, giving up a 9th-inning home run to Ted Williams. Along with Jim Tabor, CF Dom DiMaggio has a homer in the opener, then adds an unassisted double play in the nitecap.

At Yankee Stadium, Satchel Paige and Hilton Smith combine to pitch a one-hit shutout over the New York Cubans (Negro League). The Monarchs win, 9 – 0. In the first game of the twinbill, the Philadelphia Stars conquer the Baltimore Elite Giants, 7 – 4. Henry Spearman’s grand slam sparks the Philley attack.

A military relief game at the Polo Grounds with the Dodgers attracts a Polo Grounds record crowd of 57,303. The Giants, losing 7 – 4, have two on and no out in the 9th when the game is called. A government order mandates that lights must be turned out at 9:14.

Braves pitcher Jim Tobin clubs his 6th homer of the year, tying the National League record for homers by a pitcher, but he loses to the Phils, 4 – 2.

White Sox 1B Don Kolloway’s 2-out steal of home in the 5th inning is the only run of the game against Tiger lefty Hal Newhouser. Sore-armed Thornton Lee is the winner. There are seven games played today, and five end in shutouts.

An editorial in The Sporting News argues for segregation on the diamond. The column states that members of each race “prefer to draw their talents from their own ranks and both groups know their crowd psychology and do not care to run the risk of damaging their own game.”

August 8, 1942

1942 – A beanball salvo between Manny Salvo of the Braves and Whit Wyatt of the Dodgers ends in a 2 – 0 Boston victory. Only two batters are hit‚ but many pitches are close and the hurlers almost come to blows twice. Salvo gets fined $50 and Wyatt $75. Wyatt also tosses a bat. For Wyatt (8-1)‚ it is his first loss after 10 straight wins over the Braves.

As a warm-up to the upcoming series at St. Louis with Brooklyn, the Cardinals win their 7th straight, a 7 – 2 win over Pittsburgh behind rookie Johnny Beazley.

The Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds, 10 – 8, in 18 innings at Cincinnati. The Reds tie the score in the 9th, 10th, and 12th innings before the Cubs hang on. Stan Hackcollects five hits and three runs for Chicago. Both teams combine to notch 25 bases on balls for the match, and the Cubs strand 23 runners, while the Reds leave 21, a major-league record until 1974. Each team uses six pitchers, also a record. The Reds take game two by a 2 – 1 score.

August 11, 1942

A quirk in the major league rules results in the first game of a doubleheader at Cleveland Stadium being suspended due to darkness, but allows the Tigers to beat the Indians in the nightcap, 3-2. The scoreless opener was stopped in the 14th inning because the ML edict states games started in daylight could not be completed under artificial lights, but the rule did not apply to the second game of the twin bill because it would be started after the sun went down.

At Cleveland‚ in the first game of a twi-nighter‚ Indian P Al Milnar has a no-hitter until Doc Cramer singles with 2 out in the 9th. But the duel with Detroit’s Tommy Bridges ends in a 14-inning scoreless tie because the rules state the game cannot be continued under the lights. Milnar allows just two hits and his catcher, Gene Desautels, catches the entire game without a putout or assist.

With two outs and two strikes in the last of the 9th, Dolph Camilli hits a two-run homer to give the Dodgers a 5 – 4 win over the Braves. With the homer, his 20th, Camilli takes over the National League lead.

Despite Bill Nicholson hitting three homers, two doubles and a single, the Cubs lose two games to the Pirates, 8 – 5 and 8 – 7, the nitecap in 11 innings.

At Fenway Park the Sox sweep a pair from the Senators, winning each by one run. In the opening 2 – 1 win, Ted Williams’ two-run homer backs Tex Hughson’s 9th straight win and 15th overall. The 7 – 6 nitecap win goes to Broadway Charlie Wagner, whose last six wins, since June 7th, have all been by one run, including a pair of 1 – 0 wins. Lou Finney drives in the tying and winning runs with a triple.

1942 – In the first 1942 East-West Game, the East wins yet again, 5 – 2. Leon Day retires all seven batters he faces, five of them by strikeout for the East, while Satchel Paige bombs for the West.

After going 1-6 before the All-Star break, Carl Hubbell posts his 8th straight win, beating the Braves, 10 – 2. The 39-year-old veteran is backed by Mel Ott’s three hits, including a home run into the LF stands at the Polo Grounds.

In the second 1942 East-West Game, the East romps, 9-2, with the West making six errors and Gene Bremer and Verdell Mathis pitching poorly. Willie Wells smacks three doubles for the victors.

1942 – Cubs catcher Clyde McCullough, SS Lennie Merullo, and 1B Phil Cavarretta combine on a triple play in the top of the 11th, and Bill Nicholson homers in the bottom half of the inning, as the Chicago Cubs stun the Cincinnati Reds, 5 – 4.

Seven of 16 games played today are shutouts. A near-miss is by White Sox veteran Ted Lyons. Taking a regular Sunday start, he wins his 256th career game, a 3-hitter 3 – 1 complete game victory over Cleveland.

In the first game, the Giants take a 4 – 2 lead in the 10th on Johnny Mize’s 2-run home run, only to see Dolph Camilli hit reliever Harry Feldman’s first pitch for a grand slam and give Dem Bums a 6 – 4 win. In the second game, the Dodgers score two in the 5th to take a 7 – 5 lead in a game halted by darkness. The Dodgers now lead St. Louis by 7 1/2 games.

1942 – The Dodgers open a 4-game series in St. Louis with Larry French (13-1) on the mound for the front-runners. Terry Moore scores four runs for the Birds as they coast to a 7 – 1 victory behind Max Lanier’s 14th victory.

August 25, 1942

1942 – The largest night crowd in St. Louis history watch two aces deal, the Dodgers’ Whit Wyatt and the Cardinals’ Mort Cooper, go scoreless for 12 innings. Both teams score in the 13th, and the Cards win it in the 14th, 2 – 1, on Walker Cooper’s solo shot. The win by Cooper cuts the Dodgers’ lead over St. Louis to 5 1/2 games.

Johnny Beazley wins his 16th game of the year, 2 – 1 over the Dodgers in 10 innings. The win caps a sweep of Brooklyn, with Max Lanier having edged Larry French in the opener two days before.

Brooklyn salvages a win, 4 – 1, to leave St. Louis with a 5 1/2 game lead.

1942 – The Giants’ Mel Ott collects his 2,500th hit in a 5 – 5 tie in Chicago in game 2. In the opener, the Giants win, 8 – 6, as Ace Adams beats Hi Bithorn.

August 31, 1942

1942 – Larry MacPhail seeks insurance for the Dodger pennant run by buying Bobo Newsom from the Senators for $25,000. The purchase had been rumored for weeks. The veteran will respond by shutting out Cincinnati, 2 – 0 in three days.

September 1, 1942

The second-place Cardinals match Brooklyn by recalling OF Erv Dusak. Cards’ owner Sam Breadon responds‚ “They can have their Newsom‚ but I’d rather have Dusak. He has been one of the most sought-after players in the minor leagues.” Dusak‚ however‚ hits just .185. After going 24-9 in July and 25-8 in August‚ the Cardinals are still 3 1/2 games behind Brooklyn. Brooklyn beats Pittsburgh today‚ 4 – 2.

September 1, 1942

A story in the Chicago Tribune reports that player-manager Parnell Woods of the Negro American League Cleveland Buckeyes‚ and two teammates have been invited to try out with the Indians at the start of the 1943season. The two teammates are Gene Bremmer and Sam Jethroe‚ who is leading the league in hitting with a .450 average.

September 6, 1942

1942 – Hank Gornicki shuts out the Cubs‚ 5 – 0‚ in the opener and Pirate teammate Luke Hamlin follows and shuts out the Cubs in the nitecap‚ 6 – 0.

September 7, 1942

Cleveland Buckeye backstop Buster Brown and pitcher Smoky Owens are killed almost immediately, and three of their teammates along with the team’s general manager are seriously injured when a truck slams into the rear of their car. The fatal accident occurred at 3 a.m. in Geneva, Ohio as the Negro American League team was traveling to Akron after having played a twin bill against the Black Yankees in Buffalo.

The first exhibition game between two Negro League teams is finally played in Boston when the Philadelphia Stars edge the Baltimore Elite Giants in a rain-shortened seven-inning game at Fenway Park, 8-7. The Cradle of Liberty, unlike many metropolitan areas in the East and South, did not have a Black team represent the city, nor did the community embrace the concept of hosting Negro League contests.

1942 – Ed Freed of the Philadelphia Phillies collects one single, 2 doubles, and a triple in his major league debut, but the Reds win 8 – 5 in 11 innings. The 5′ 6″ Freed will total only 10 hits during his brief big league career.

Paul Gillespie homers in his first major league at-bat, hitting a solo shot off Harry Feldman in the second inning of the Cubs’ 4-3 loss to New York at the Polo Grounds. The Chicago reserve catcher will become the first of only two players in baseball history, along with John Miller (1966-1969), to a hit home run in their first and last big league at bats, when he blasts a round-tripper in his final plate appearance in 1945.

September 12, 1942

Mort Cooper wins his 20th game and 8th shutout, stopping Brooklyn, 3 – 0. St. Louis finally catches the Dodgers when Max Lanier wins the second game, 2 – 1.

September 13, 1942

1942 – Chicago Cub SS Lennie Merullo makes a major league record 4 errors in the 2nd inning of the nightcap against the Boston Braves. Merullo’s son is born today and is named Boots. The Cubs win, 12 – 8, after losing the first game 10 – 6.

September 14, 1942

The Yankees win their 13th American League pennant when they beat Cleveland at League Park, 8-3. The Bronx Bombers will finish the season 103-51, nine games ahead of Boston, but will lose the World Series to the Cardinals in five games.

In the Negro League World Series, Leon Day, pitching for the Homestead Grays, fans 12 in beating Satchel Paige and the Kansas City Monarchs, 4 – 1, in Game 4. The Monarchs protest, contending that Day and 3 other players were picked up from other teams. Day’s win is disallowed, and the Monarchs sweep the 4 games.

September 14, 1942

With all the National League hubbub, the Yankees go about their lofty business, clinching the flag against Cleveland 8 – 3. Tiny Bonham wins his 20th game, and Joe DiMaggio strokes 4 hits.

September 16, 1942

The Phillies, bowing to the Cubs in the nightcap of a twin bill, 4-1, become the first major league team to have five consecutive 100 loss seasons. From 1938 to the end of this season, the team will compile a 227-532 (.299) record under three different managers.

September 23, 1942

1942 – Larry French of the Brooklyn Dodgers pitches a brilliant one-hitter, beating the Philadelphia Phillies, 6 – 0, for his 197th career win. After a brief relief stint on the 26th, he will join the U.S. Navy, rise through the ranks and retire in 1969 with the rank of captain. Larry MacPhail, the 52-year-old Dodger president, also announces today that he is quitting at the end of the season to re-enter the army.

1942 – With the Giants’ 3rd-place finish secure, OF Hank Leiber pitches a complete game 9 – 1 loss against the Phillies at the Polo Grounds. He yields 9 hits and strikes out 5 in his only major league pitching appearance. The Phils score 5 of their runs without a hit.

September 26, 1942

Youngsters, admitted free for bringing scrap metal to aid the war effort, get restless and invade the field at the Polo Grounds in the 8th inning of the second game with the Giants leading, 5 – 2. Umpire Ziggy Sears forfeits the game, 9 – 0, to the Braves. Boston P Warren Spahn is not charged with a loss, although he was losing at the time of the forfeit. But he is given credit for a complete game, his only one in 4 appearances for the year.

September 27, 1942

Phils outfielder Danny Litwhiler completes his 151st errorless game of the season in a game against the Dodgers. Litwhiler becomes the first OF to avoid an error the entire season. He has 308 putouts and 9 assists on the year.

The Red Sox’s Tex Hughson wins his 22nd to tie Mort Cooper for the major league lead, as the Sox edge the Yankees. A Fenway Park crowd of 26,166 – including 4,293 youngsters who gained free admission by bringing 29,000 pounds of scrap metal – watches Hughson scatter 11 hits. Ted Williams, in his final appearance before entering the war, has a single to finish the season at .356 and wins his second straight batting title. Teammate Johnny Pesky is 2nd at .331. Williams also leads the majors in home runs (36), RBI (137), runs (141), and walks (145).

1942 – Satchel Paige of the Kansas City Monarchs pitches 5 2/3 innings of hitless relief against the Washington-Homestead Grays, winning 9 – 5 in Philadelphia in the 1942 Colored World Series, finishing a four-game sweep of the Grays.

With a combination of infielders consisted mostly of shortstop Eddie Joost, second sacker Pete Suder and first baseman Ferris Fain, the A’s established a major-league record for turning 217 double plays. 1942 – The Yankees trade OF Roy Cullenbine and C Buddy Rosar to the Indians for Roy Weatherly and IF Oscar Grimes. With the draft in mind, all four players are married with one child each. Rosar had been in the doghouse with Joe McCarthy for leaving the team without permission the weekend of July 18-19 to take a police examination in Buffalo. The leave-taking prompted the Yankees to sign veteran C Rollie Hemsley.
