Reds pitcher Bruce Berenyi makes his major league debut and the Astros welcome him with a 6-run first inning. Mario Soto relieves and pitches 8 2/3 inning of shutout ball, allowing just three hits. The Reds rally to win, 8 – 6.

Reds fireballer Mario Soto strikes out 15 Braves in a 7 – 1 Reds win in Atlanta.

The Reds’ Mario Soto stops Houston, 7 – 0, beating Joe Niekro, who gives up a grand slam to Ray Knight. Houston and Los Angeles are tied for 1st (82-62) with 17 games left on the schedule.

June 27, 1982

The Braves tie the major-league record with seven double plays in a 2 – 0, 14-inning win over Cincinnati. Mario Soto pitches 10 shutout innings for the Reds but gets no decision. The loss starts the Reds on a streak where they’ll lose 20 out of 23 games.

August 17, 1982

1982 – Cincinnati’s Mario Soto fans 15 Mets in a 9 – 2 victory to raise his league-leading strikeout total to 209. Soto walks none. He will finish the season with 274 strikeouts, second only to Steve Carlton’s 286. The Reds’ Cesar Cedeno steals his 500th base, just the 10th player in history to reach that level.

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mario Soto is one out away from a no-hitter when the Cardinals’ George Hendrick hits a home run to tie the game, 1 – 1. Cincinnati then rallies for a run in the bottom of the 9th inning to give Soto a one-hit, 2 – 1 victory.

May 27, 1984

Mario Soto, Cincinnati’s starting pitcher, is ejected from the game when he shoves Steve Rippley, the third base umpire who called Ron Cey’s foul ball down the left field line a home run. Although the decision will be reversed, the Reds’ right-hander will also attack Cubs coach Don Zimmer, prompting National League president Chub Feeney to suspended the fiery fireballer for five games, the first of the two suspensions he will be given this season.

1981 – Bob Knepper tosses his second consecutive shutout, a 1-0 whitewash over Cincinnati. Denny Walling ‘s homer off Mario Soto accounts for the game’s only run. Walling also supplies a defensive gem, an over-the shoulder grab with two men aboard to thwart a Red threat. 

Biography

 
The hard-throwing Soto started making his mark as the Reds’ outstanding pitcher in 1980, working short relief, long relief, and starting. From 1981 to 1985, Soto had more strikeouts than any major league pitcher, including a club-record 274 in 1982. He received the Buck Canel Award as the outstanding Latin-American in the majors in 1983 and started that year’s All-Star Game. He led the NL in complete games in 1983 and 1984, was Cincinnati’s MVP in 1982 and 1983, tied a club record by starting on Opening Day five straight years (1982-86), and set a club record with four Opening Day wins in Cincinnati. Soto developed severe shoulder trouble in 1986. He worked hard to make Cincinnati’s 1988 squad and even started the Reds’ home opener, but he was ineffective and was released before the All-Star break. Soto ended his Cincinnati career second on the club’s all-time strikeout list.
