1954 – Ironically, before he ever reaches the majors, in the midst of his only minor league season, comes Roberto Clemente’s greatest baseball birthday, his 20th, complete with a signature Clemente climax. Some national exposure ensues, courtesy of The Sporting News’s Lloyd McGowan: “Roberto Clemente, rookie Puerto Rican outfielder, turned in the key defensive play that enabled the Royals to edge Toronto, 8 to 7. With two out in the ninth, Clemente uncorked a perfect throw to cut down the Leafs’ potential tying run at the plate and end the game.”
1954 – In a throwing contest between Jimmy Piersall and Willie Mays before a Red Sox-Giants charity game in Boston, Piersall hurts his arm. He starts the game but leaves midway. He wakes up the following morning with a sore arm that stays with him a year, and he will never throw quite as well again.

The inaugural cover of the innovative new magazine features a Mark Kauffman photo of Braves slugger Eddie Mathews at bat, Giants catcher Wes Westrum behind the plate, and umpire Augie Donatelli calling balls and strikes in Milwaukee County Stadium.
On august 15, 1954 at Ebbets Field Gil Hodges hits his 200th career homerun. His blast came in the 5th off Al Corwin in 9-4 Dodger victory. The last HR of his career was #370, which put him tenth on the all-time list and first among all right-handers in the history of the National League….
The Orioles lose their 27th consecutive game as the visiting team in Cleveland with a 3-1 nightcap loss to the Indians. The record losing streak on the road against one opponent started on August 13, 1952 when the franchise played as the St. Louis Browns.
1954 – Dodgers slugger Duke Snider fans twice in the 6th inning of a game against the Giants, as the Dodgers hold on to a 6 – 5 victory.
8/13/1954 – In a 16-inning game in which the home-standing White Sox beat the Tigers, 1-0, substitute first-sacker Wayne Belardi batted out of turn. Reno Bertoia pinch ran for fifth-place hitting first baseman Walt Dropo in the thirteenth inning and stayed in the game playing second base. Belardi entered the game in the eighth spot at that time. In the fifteenth inning after fourth-place hitter Ray Boone had walked with one out, Belardi came to the plate in Bertoia’s spot and fouled out to the catcher. Detroit realized their mistake and sent Belardi up again the next inning and he successfully sacrificed catcher Red Wilson to second base. Both pitchers, Al Aber for Detroit and Jack Harshman for Chicago, pitched complete games.
1954 – At Boston‚ Chuck Stobbs beats his former team for the 5th straight time‚ winning, 9 – 5. Mickey Vernon has 4 hits. But ex-Red Sox Mickey McDermott then loses‚ 5 – 0‚ to Frank Sullivan. Eddie Yost of the Senators draws his 100th walk for the 5th year in a row.
