On April 22, 1970, New York Mets ace Tom Seaver ties a major league record by striking out 19 batters in a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres. Seaver also strikes out the last 10 batters he faces, setting another big league mark. Earlier in the day, Seaver was officially presented with the 1969 National League Cy Young Award.
4/21/1970: The Dodgers were in Montreal to play the Expos at Jarry Park in an afternoon contest. Willie Crawford smacked a three-run homer for Los Angeles in the first inning. Adolfo Phillips hit a homer in the bottom of the first and another in the third. Andy Kosko added a homer for LA in the third. These four round-trippers were lost when the game was called after a 70-minute rain delay in the bottom of the third with the Dodgers ahead, 7-3.
1970 – Tom Griffin tosses a one-hitter in a 5-1 victory over the Padres. A double by Cito Gaston in the seventh is the lone safety although Jim Wynn robbed Gaston of a similar hit earlier . Houston also pulls off a triple steal when John Mayberry, Doug Rader and Johnny Edwards run on a failed squeeze play.
Nolan Ryan strikes out 15 batters and pitches a one-hitter as the New York Mets defeat the Philadelphia Phillies, 7 – 0, at Shea Stadium. It is the first shutout of Ryan’s career.
Bud Harrelson of the New York Mets hits a home run in the 1st inning of a 6 – 0 win over the Phillies. The homer is one of only seven in Harrelson’s 16-year career and the only one he will ever hit at Shea Stadium.
On April 16, 1970, Cincinnati Reds ace Jim Maloney tears his Achilles tendon while running the bases and is replaced by rookie left-hander Don Gullett, who wins his first major league game. Although Maloney will eventually make a comeback from the injury, he will never win another game.
1970 – John Mayberry slugs two home runs, drives in four and scores three times in a ten-inning, 7-6 victory over San Francisco . Jim Beauchamp singles Mayberry home with the winning run.
In their home opener at the Oakland Coliseum, a 2-1 victory over Milwaukee, the A’s use gold-colored bases. This colorful innovation introduced by team owner Charlie O. Finley will quickly be banned by the MLB’s Rules Committee.
