1919 – At the Baker Bowl, Joe Oeschger of the Philadelphia Phillies and Burleigh Grimes of the Brooklyn Robins pitch complete games in a 9 – 9, 20-inning tie. Both teams score three runs in the 19th inning. Oeschger gives up 22 hits and walks five, while Grimes allows 15 hits and walks five.
1917 – The Philadelphia Phillies keep swapping with the Chicago Cubs, this month sending OF Dode Paskert, a seven-year veteran, to Chicago for slugger Cy Williams. Williams will flourish in the Baker Bowl, and will hit 222 home runs for the Phillies over the next 13 years. Paskert will not enjoy the same success at Wrigley Field.
At the Baker Bowl, Grover Cleveland Alexander is coasting with a two-hit, 6 – 0 lead in the 8th over the Cubs, when weak-hitting Steve Yerkes lines a single followed by manager Joe Tinker’s only hit of the year. On a double play grounder, 1B Fred Luderus pulls his foot off the bag and Chicago goes on to score three runs. Second-place Philadelphia wins, 6 – 3, to pull with 1 1/2 games of Brooklyn.
The Giants start the season on the road with a 5-4 loss to Philadelphia at the Baker Bowl. The game marks the debut of New York’s new purple plaid uniforms, fortunately, a trend that will last only a year.
1915 – The Phillies get four runs early off Boston Red Sox pitcher Rube Foster in Game 5 of the World Series. The Red Sox break a tie in the 9th inning for the third time in the Series, as Harry Hooper hits his second home run of the game off reliever Eppa Rixey. Boston wins, 5 – 4, to take the Series in five games.
