At Busch Stadium in St. Louis, the American League nips the National League, 6 – 5, in the 24th All-Star Game. Both teams score 3 in the 9th inning, but Minnie Minoso’s running catch with the bases loaded chokes off the NL’s last-half rally.

8/13/1954 – In a 16-inning game in which the home-standing White Sox beat the Tigers, 1-0, substitute first-sacker Wayne Belardi batted out of turn. Reno Bertoia pinch ran for fifth-place hitting first baseman Walt Dropo in the thirteenth inning and stayed in the game playing second base. Belardi entered the game in the eighth spot at that time. In the fifteenth inning after fourth-place hitter Ray Boone had walked with one out, Belardi came to the plate in Bertoia’s spot and fouled out to the catcher. Detroit realized their mistake and sent Belardi up again the next inning and he successfully sacrificed catcher Red Wilson to second base. Both pitchers, Al Aber for Detroit and Jack Harshman for Chicago, pitched complete games.
1951 – The Baseball Writers Association of America name Gil McDougald of the New York Yankees as American league Rookie of the Year. The Chicago White Sox object to McDougald’s accolade, offering the statistical accomplishments of their superlative rookie, Minnie Miñoso.
In the second game of a doubleheader, the Browns’ Ned Garver, en route to a 20-win season, limits the White Sox to two hits, winning, 3 – 1. The loss drops the Sox out of the American League lead. Chicago wins the opener, 2 – 1 in 11 innings on Minnie Minoso’s 400-foot homer to left center. Minnie’s blow breaks up a pitching duel between loser Duane Pillette and Ken Holcombe.
