On January 29, 1930, the Boston Red Sox sell former American League home run king Ken Williams to the rival New York Yankees for the waiver price. Williams, a lifetime .319 hitter, will be released prior to the start of the season and will never again play in the major leagues.
It is Charlie Gehringer Day in Detroit, and the popular 2B handles 10 chances in the field, hits three singles and a home run, and steals home in a 17 – 13 win over the Yankees.

In front of 55,000 fans at Yankee Stadium, the Indians tally nine runs with two outs in the ninth inning to rout the Bronx Bombers in the nightcap, 14-6. The Tribe’s comeback is assisted by two New York errors, including a miscue by Mark Koenig on a ground ball to short that would have ended the game.
At Cleveland’s League Park, the Indians defeat the Yankees, 4 – 3, in the first game in major league history in which players from both teams wear numbers on the back of their jerseys.
On April 16, 1929, the New York Yankees become the first team to permanently feature numbers on the backs of their uniforms. The numbers correspond to each player’s position in the batting order. The numbers also allow fans and broadcasters to more easily identify the players. Future Hall of Famers Earle Combs, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig wear #1, #3 and #4, respectively.
1929 – The New York Yankees announce they will put numbers on the backs of their uniforms, becoming the first baseball team to start continuous use of the numbers. The first numbers are based on positions in the batting order; thus, Babe Ruth will wear number 3 and Lou Gehrig number 4. In a few weeks, the Cleveland Indians announce that they, too, will put numbers on the uniforms. By 1931, all American League teams will use them. It will be 1933 before all National League players are numbered.
