A sold-out crowd, including representatives from each of the other 15 major league clubs, attends Connie Mack Day in Philadelphia to honor the 78 year-old president-manager of the A’s. The celebration includes the renaming of the team’s home field from Shibe Park to Connie Mack Stadium, a change that doesn’t officially take hold until 1953.
1934 – Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees won the American League Triple Crown after hitting .363 with 49 home runs and 165 RBI. Nevertheless, Philadelphia Athletics C Mickey Cochrane, who hit .320 with 2 home runs and 76 RBI, is named AL Most Valuable Player. St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Dizzy Dean, who posted a 30-7 record with 195 strikeouts and a 2.66 ERA, is chosen as National League MVP.
1934 – Mildred Didrickson (also known as Babe Zaharias), the renowned all-around female athlete, pitches the 1st inning for the Philadelphia Athletics in a spring training exhibition game against the Brooklyn Dodgers. She gives up one walk but no hits. Two days later she pitches again, this time one inning for the St. Louis Cardinals against the Boston Red Sox. Didrickson is less successful the second time, giving up four hits and three runs. Bill Hallahan relieves her, as she does not have an at bat in either game. She will also play several games for the House of David this season. Didrickson is the second female to play exhibitions with a major league team. Previously, first baseman Lizzie Murphy played for an American League All-Star team on August 14, 1922.

1932 – The New York Yankees draw the largest paid attendance, 55,452, for any Yankee Stadium opener. Babe Ruth homers as Lefty Gomez beats Lefty Grove in the 8 – 3 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics.

The Philadelphia Athletics beat the St. Louis Browns, 4 – 3, in 12 innings and score all their runs on solo home runs. Al Simmons’ lead-off home run in the bottom of the 12th makes Lefty Grove a winner over General Crowder, as both starters go all the way. Joe Boley, with two homers, and Mule Haas, with one, provide the other Athletics runs, a record to date in the American League. The New York Giants will score five runs on solo homers five weeks from now.
1929 – The Philadelphia Athletics rally for three runs in the 9th inning to beat the Chicago Cubs, 3 – 2, and take the World Series in five games. A two-run home run by Mule Haas ties the game and Bing Miller hits a RBI double to get the victory. There won’t be another winning rally by a team down two runs in the 9th inning of a Series final game in the 20th century. The Arizona Diamondbacks, in 2001, will do it next.
1927 – The Philadelphia A’s Ty Cobb makes what is celebrated at the time as his 4,000th hit, a double off Sam Gibson of Detroit. Detroit wins, 5 – 3, over Lefty Grove. Research will later reveal that he had two fewer hits than was thought at the time, and that number 4,000 actually three days later, on July 21st.
