1947 – In a meeting at the Sarasota Terrace Hotel, in Florida, former Brooklyn Dodgers manager Leo Durocher admits to Commissioner Happy Chandler that he sometimes bets on card games with the team’s pitcher, Kirby Higbe.

Cleveland Indians manager Lou Boudreau orders Jackie Price off the train at San Diego after Price lets loose two five-foot long snakes on the trip from Los Angeles. A coach full of women returning from the American Bowling Congress are extremely upset by the prank. After Indians owner Bill Veeck says “either the snakes go or Price goes,” the 35-year-old infielder’s days are numbered.

The Indians purchased George Metkovich from the Red Sox. According to legend, Casey Stengel, who will manage the Californian next season in the PCL, coins the nickname ‘Catfish’ after the first baseman/outfielder injures himself trying to extract a hook from the bottom-dweller.

Dodger president Branch Rickey names team scout Burt Shotton to replace Leo Durocher, who was suspended ten days ago by Commissioner Happy Chandler for acts “unbecoming to a major league manager.” Brooklyn’s new 62 year-old skipper reluctantly takes over the team two games into the season and will manage the club for one year in his street clothes along with wearing the team’s hat and jacket.

The Phillies players, inspired by their Alabama-born racist skipper Ben Chapman, repeatedly shout racial epitaphs, throw beanballs, and intentionally spike Brooklyn’s rookie first baseman, the first African-American to play major league baseball in the 20th century. The incident is so severe that Philadelphia’s that infielder Jeep Handley will later publicly apologize, and baseball commissioner Happy Chandler will chastise team’s manager for his bigoted leadership.

For the first time, the Cleveland Indians will play all their games at Cleveland Stadium. The Indians abandon League Park, where most weekday games have been played since Cleveland Stadium opened. New Cleveland owner Bill Veeck installs an inner fence to cut power alleys from 435 to 365 feet at Municipal Stadium.

At Cleveland Stadium, Bob Feller fires his second one-hitter in 10 days, stopping the Boston Red Sox, 2 – 0

May 8, 1947

1947 – A movement among Cardinal players to protest the first meeting with Jackie Robinson and the Dodgers is aborted by a clubhouse talk from owner Sam Breadon, according to a story by writer Stanley Woodward. League president Ford Frick had warned the team that if a strike occurred, any player involved would be suspended. Cardinal manager Eddie Dyer denies there was any strike talk. The Cards win, 5 – 1.

May 9, 1947

In his first game outside of New York City, Jackie Robinson has two hits and scores twice in the Dodgers’ 6 – 5 loss to the Phillies. After the game, the Dodgers give their young first baseman a vote of confidence by selling Howie Schultz, Robby’s back-up, to the Phils for $50,000. The next day, Branch Rickey announces he’s giving up his attempts to pry Johnny Mize away from the Giants.

May 9, 1947

Heralded Giant rookie Clint Hartung makes his first pitching appearance and throws six shutout innings of relief against the Braves. He will start 20 games and compile his best record at 9-7. He will also play seven games in the outfield and bat .309 for the year. But the Braves win today, 6 – 2, behind Warren Spahn.

A’s catcher Buddy Rosar drops Walt Judnich’s pop-up, ending his record-setting errorless game streak at 147 games. The All-Star backstop’s perfect fielding included the span of the 117 games he played for Philadelphia last season, handling 605 chances without a miscue during the entire campaign.

The previous mark was set in 1932 at Cleveland’s spacious Municipal Stadium with a Sunday afternoon game attracting 73,592 patrons to witness Philadelphia’s 1-0 victory over the hometown Indians, a contest that takes only an hour and fifty minutes to complete.

Jim Tabor of the Phillies had homered in the top of the first inning against Rip Sewell with two men on and 1 out. Elbie Fletcher of the Pirates homered in the bottom of the first against Charley Schanz with two men on and 1 out.

James Davis, 20-year-old OF of Ballinger (Longhorn League), dies as a result of being hit in the head by a pitched ball. He was hitting .333 with 19 HR in 48 games.

During the first game of a twin bill in front of 47,871 Tribe fans, Don Black retires the final ten A’s batters he faces to record the first no-hitter in the history of Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium. The crowd, the largest ever to witness a no-hitter, endures the rain and six walks as the Indians right-hander completes the 3-0 victory, the eighth no-no in franchise history.

Making his 14th major-league uniform switch, Bobo Newsom joins the Yanks. His 7-5 record the rest of the way will help the Yankees to the title. Next season, Newsom will join the Giants.

At Wrigley Field, the Cubs pummel seven Dodgers hurlers to win a second straight from the Dodgers, 12 – 7. Peanuts Lowrey and Eddie Waitkus, the first two hitters for Chicago, have five hits apiece.

The Giants hit five homers and set a club record of 144 in a split with the Pirates. The Ottmen take the lidlifter, 10 – 2, then lose, 5 – 4. Bobby Thomson has a pair of homers. The Pirates also tie a club record for homers with 86 as Hank Greenberg and Frankie Gustine go deep.

Orlando Moreno of Big Spring (Longhorn League) goes hitless, ending his consecutive game hitting streak at 43 games.

Skeeter Webb is inserted into the game to run for Fred Hutchinson, and scores a run in the Tigers’ nine-run eighth inning in Detroit’s 13-6 victory over Cleveland. Later in the frame, he comes to the plate and delivers an RBI sac fly, an unusual accomplishment for a pinch-runner.

1947 – After losing the first game to Detroit‚ 7 – 1‚ the Browns take the nitecap, 6 – 5‚ beating Hal Newhouser in relief. For Newhouser‚ it is his first loss to the Browns after 15 consecutive wins.

At Sportsman’s Park, pinch-hitter Willard Brown of the Browns becomes the first black player to hit a home run in the American League. The historic homer, an inside-the-parker off future Hall of Fame hurler Hal Newhouser, helps the Browns beat the Tigers, 6-5.

The Lowell Orphans, a bankrupt minor league team moved from Lawrence, MA last month, draws only 85 paying customers to a doubleheader. The team’s poor performance, which includes a twenty-game losing streak, causes the city to evict the New England League franchise from Alumni Field, making it necessary for the club to finish the season on the road.

1947 – Led by Eddie Miller’s grand slam and six RBIs, the Reds trounce the Giants, 6 – 1. Johnny Vander Meer is the winner over Dave Koslo.

August 20, 1947

1947 – The Boston Braves hit a million in attendance for the first time in their history and the fans get their money’s worth in the 34-hit slugfest. The Pirates notch 20 to outslug the Braves, 16 – 10. Jim Russell, with a triple, double and three singles, and Jimmy Bloodworth, with four singles, lead the Buc shots.

In the first game of the doubleheader in Philadelphia, the Reds score nine runs in the 10th inning to win, 12 – 3. Ten batters go the plate before an out is made. Schoolboy Rowe wins the nitecap for Philly, 8 – 6, and helps the cause with a homer.

The Giants break the National League record for homers in a season, held by the Cubs, with their 172nd in a 4 – 0 shutout by Larry Jansen. Chicago’s Hank Borowy takes the loss. The Cubs take the nitecap, 8 – 3, led by Eddie Waitkus’ inside-the-park grand slam. This is the third such slam this season and that won’t be matched till 1990.

August 25, 1947

The Cubs’ Billy Jurges, shifted from coach to active player two days ago, smashes a two-run homer in the 10th to give Chicago a 9 – 7 win over the Giants. Also homering are Bob Scheffing and Andy Pafko for Chicago and Willard Marshall and Bobby Thomson for the Giants.

8/26/1947: In the top of the second of the second game of a doubleheader, Clyde McCullough of the Cubs hit a home run off of Giants hurler Sheldon Jones. The game was rained out in the bottom of the inning with the Cubs ahead 1-0.

In St. Louis, Fred Hutchinson does it all for Detroit, whipping the Browns, 5 – 4. After tripling against Ellis Kinder in the 3rd, Hutch takes advantage of the pitcher’s big windup to swipe home. He also adds a single.

8/29/1947: Cleveland’s Hank Edwards hit a two run homer with no one out in the bottom of the first inning of a game at Municipal Stadium. The game was stopped four batters later because of rain.

The Cubs overcome Ralph Kiner’s 39th homer of the season to defeat the Pirates, 6 – 3, in Chicago. Doyle Lade goes the distance. Kiner’s homer, with one aboard, gives him 101 RBIs for the year.

September 1, 1947

Jack Lohrke hits a homer against the Braves‚ number 183 for the season for the Giants‚ breaking the major league record held by the 1936 Yankees. Mel Ott’s club had hit 5 home runs in a doubleheader against the Cubson August 24th to break Chicago’s 1929 NL record. The Giants will finish with 221 homers‚ led by Johnny Mize‚ Walker Cooper‚ Willard Marshall‚ and rookie Bobby Thomson.

In 7 – 4 loss in the nitecap of a doubleheader‚ A’s 1B Ferris Fain participates in 6 double plays to tie the major league record. Washington takes the opener as well‚ 4 – 0‚ on Mickey Haefner’s 7-hitter.

The Giants surpass the mark established by the Yankees in 1936 for the most home runs hit in a season by a team. The three Polo Grounds homers in today’s twin bill sweep over Boston raise the record total to 185, and the New York National League club will finish the season with 221 round-trippers.

Rookie Bill McCahan of the Philadelphia Athletics no-hits the Washington Senators, 3 – 0. McCahan, the former Duke University star, was the losing pitcher when Don Black threw his no-hitter on July 10th. The Senators had not suffered a no-hitter since Ernie Shore pitched his 26-out “perfect game” in 1917.

At Fenway Park, Tommy Henrich and Joe DiMaggio lead the way with four hits each as the Yankees bang out a total eighteen hits, all singles, defeating the Red Sox, 11 – 2.

At Shibe Park, A’s right-hander Bill McCahan throws a no-hitter as a rookie, beating the Senators, 3-0. The WW II test pilot, the seventh player in baseball history to toss a no-hitter in his freshman year, hurts his arm lifting barrels of oil in his offseason job, cutting his promising baseball career short due to the injury.

1947 – Starting P Ox Miller of the Cubs hits a game-winning grand slam in a 4 – 3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, but does not go the required 5 innings to gain the win.

Ralph Kiner hits 3 successive home runs for the Pittsburgh Pirates

Pirates’ outfielder Ralph Kiner hits a record eight home runs in four games. Tony Lazzeri had hit seven round-trippers in four games in 1936.

The first Reds game is broadcast on television by W8XCT, the station which will become known as WLWT. An estimated home audience of 10,000 viewers watches their hometown heroes lose to the Pirates in the Sunday afternoon contest at Crosley Field, 11-7.

1947 – The Braves’ Warren Spahn delays the Dodgers’ clinching the pennant by shutting them out, 4 – 0, for his 20th win.

9/21/1947: Three home runs were lost due to a rainout in Detroit. The Indians’ Joe Gordon and Les Fleming hit back-to-back shots to lead off the second inning off Hal Newhouser. Vic Wertz of the Tigers had hit a run blast in the first off Don Black. Those were the only runs when the game was stopped in the top of the fourth.

On an off day, the Dodgers clinched the National League pennant, when Chicago takes the nightcap of the twin bill against St. Louis. Although it is past midnight when the good news about their beloved team reaches the borough, Brooklynites begin to gather on Flatbush for an impromptu celebration.

1947 – Giants rookie Larry Jansen wins his 21st game of the season, beating the Braves’ Red Barrett, 2 – 1. It is Jansen’s 10th win in a row, all complete games.

On the final Friday of the season, a reluctant Larry MacPhail is asked by team broadcaster Mel Allen to appear at a ceremony in front of home plate before a game against the Senators. With his players present, the Yankee owner receives a seven-piece silver tea service, a gift from his team with the inscription: TO LARRY MACPHAIL, greatest executive in baseball, whose zealous efforts were a major factor in our 19-game streak and the winning of the American League pennant. – From his Yankees, 1947.

Harry Walker hits .363 to win the National League batting title during the season he is traded to the Phillies, after appearing in just ten games with the World Champion Cardinals, a team in which he played a pivotal role. The ‘Hat’s older brother, Dixie, also won a batting crown the Senior Circuit with a .357 BA for Brooklyn in 1944.

Ralph Branca becomes the youngest player to start a World Series opener. At Yankee Stadium, the 21-year and 9 months old right hander and the Dodgers lose to the Bronx Bombers, 5-1.
