1995 – Gerry Hunsicker is named as General Manager. Drayton McLane also announces that the team will continue to play in the Astrodome in 1996 but will be sold to out-of-town interests if attendance does not increase.
1995 – Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Hideo Nomo is named National League Rookie of the Year, becoming the first Japanese player ever to win a Major League Baseball award. Nomo posted a 13-6 record with 236 strikeouts and a 2.54 ERA in 191.1 innings.
For a bit less money paid by CBS for the rights to televise the 1990-1993 seasons of big league games, Major League Baseball comes to an agreement with the Fox Broadcasting Company to air regular season contests on Saturday afternoons. Similar to the format used by The Baseball Network, Fox will offer weekly regionalized telecasts based solely on a viewer’s geography.
The New York Yankees name Joe Torre their manager, replacing the recently departed Buck Showalter. Torre, a former St. Louis Cardinals’ star and National League batting champion, will guide the Yankees to four World Championships in his first five years with the team.
The expansion Devil Rays unveil their official game uniforms during a special fashion show staged at the Florida Aquarium. The black, green, and blue jersey, which the team will start wearing in 1998, features a manta ray as its logo.
