Five-run outbursts in the second and fifth innings get the expansion franchise off in style. Phil Nevin belts two triples in his first game as an Astro.

1993 – Free agent pitcher Doug Drabek tosses two shutout innings in a 3-2 win over the Dodgers. It is Drabek’s first start with Houston after a career in Pittsburgh that included a Cy Young Award and three division crowns.

1993 – Sherry Davis becomes the first woman major league public address announcer when she is hired by the San Francisco Giants to work at Candlestick Park.

The Reds announce the St. Bernard owned by Reds president Marge Schott is being prohibited access to the Riverfront Stadium field for the season. The edict to ban Schottzie 02 comes from the MLB’s Executive Council, who have received numerous complaints from the players about dogs running on the field.

March 22, 1993

1993 – Cleveland Indians pitchers Steve Olin and Tim Crews are killed, and Bob Ojeda is seriously injured, when the motorboat in which they are riding strikes a pier on Little Lake Nellie near Winter Haven, Florida. Crews and Olin are the first active major leaguers to die since Thurman Munson in 1979.

1993 – The Chicago Cubs put second baseman Ryne Sandberg (broken hand) and shortstop Shawon Dunston (lower back) on the disabled list. The two will miss Opening Day for the first time in nine years together.

1993 – Peanuts character Charlie Brown hits a game-winning home run – his first round tripper in 43 years. Almost ten percent of the nearly 18,000 Peanuts strips created by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz focus on baseball.

The Phils’ Mitch Williams changes his uniform number from 28 to 99‚ the highest number in history. He picks up a save today and vows to throw at 99 mph every outing.

Jack Morris sets a major league record when he makes his 14th consecutive Opening Day start, taking the loss in the Blue Jays’ 8-1 defeat to Seattle at the Kingdome. During the span, which started in 1980 with the Tigers (10 seasons) and continued with the Twins (1 season), the 37 year-old right-hander has compiled an 8-6 record in his first day assignments.

The Phillies sweep the season’s opening series against Houston with a ten-inning 6-3 victory at the Astrodome. The comeback victory, which will become a trademark of the eventual National League champs, marks the first time the franchise had won its first three away games since 1915, when Pat Moran’s men won their first six games on the road, playing in Boston and New York.

Thanks to a four-run first inning sparked by Eric Young’s leadoff home run, the Rockies defeat the Expos 11-4 for their first win ever. The crowd of 80,227 at Colorado’s Mile High Stadium establishes a new major league Opening Day attendance record.

Barry Bonds, who signed a six-year, $43 million deal as a free agent, the richest contract in baseball history, delights the crowd of 56,689 at Candlestick Park by homering in his first at-bat in front of the hometown fans. The clean-up hitter’s second-inning drive to deep right field off Mike Hammond proves to be the difference in San Francisco’s 4-3 extra-inning victory over Florida.

Lee Smith becomes the all-time saves leader in the major leagues as the Cardinals beat the Dodgers, 9 – 7. Smith picks up his 358th save, surpassing Jeff Reardon.

The first-ever Australian battery comes from the Milwaukee Brewers. Left-handed pitcher Graeme Lloyd and catcher Dave Nilsson, who make up half of the total number of Australian players to ever make the major leagues to that point, make history in the Brewers’ 12 – 2 loss to the California Angels.

After establishing the all-time career major league record last night with his 358th save, St. Louis Cardinals reliever Lee Smith breaks the National League mark recording his 301st save in the senior circuit.

Andre Dawson becomes the 25th player to hit 400 home runs as the Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians, 4 – 3.

The Detroit Tigers score 20 runs in a game for the second time this week, beating the Seattle Mariners, 20 – 3. Rob Deer is 1 for 2 and scores four runs, while Travis Fryman has four hits and scores five times. Chad Kreuter adds four hits and three runs and Gary Thurman paces the Tigers with four RBI.

In the Baltimore Orioles’ 7 – 5 loss to the Angels, Baltimore winds up with three runners on third base in a rare display of dumb baseball. With the bases loaded and one out, Mike Devereaux hits a fly ball which is trapped by Angels center fielder Chad Curtis, who throws home. Jeff Tackett, the baserunner on third, returns to the base after running halfway home. Brady Anderson, who was on second, advances to third. Chito Martinez, the baserunner on first base, rounds second and heads for third. Angels catcher John Orton walks to third base where he tags all three runners. Tackett is called out on a force, and Martinez is also called out, completing the rare inning-ending double play.

Vince Coleman accidentally strikes Doc Gooden’s right shoulder blade with a golf club while practicing his swing in the Shea Stadium clubhouse. The right-hander is not seriously hurt, but will pitch in tomorrow’s afternoon’s game, skipping his scheduled start tonight.

Texas defeats the Brewers, 13 – 2, collecting 15 hits. Jose Canseco hits a single, double and home run before leaving for a pinch runner. Protecting a 12 – 2 lead, Jeff Bronkey pitches three innings in relief of Robb Nen, and earns a save in his major league debut with Texas. Bronkey is the first major leaguer born in Afghanistan.

Mariners’ third baseman Mike Blowers becomes the 13th player in major league history to hit grand slams in consecutive games. The fourth inning bases full round-tripper off Craig Lefferts contributes to Seattle’s 16-9 victory over Texas at Arlington Stadium.

B.J. Birdie, mascot of the Toronto Blue Jays, is ejected from Toronto’s game against Minnesota by umpire Jim McKean after making gestures which the ump finds offensive. The Blue Jays go on to lose the game, 2 – 1.

Cardinal minor leaguer Diego Ruiz is killed and Eddie Williams is injured when their car slams into a cement pole. Williams, a catcher with the Springfield Cardinals of the Midwest League, is the driver.

1993 – Ken Caminiti swats two solo homers and Jeff Bagwell hits only the tenth Loge Level home run at Jack Murphy Stadium, but the Padres dominate in a 9-4 decision. The blasts account for three of the five hits the Astros accumulate.

The Royals Hall of Fame inducts team owner Ewing Kauffman. The public appearance at the stadium will be the philanthropist’s last trip to the Kansas City ballpark, which will be renamed in his honor shortly before his death on the first day in August.

Texas Rangers outfielder Jose Canseco, who three days earlier had a ball hit by Carlos Martinez bounce off his head for a home run, voluntarily pitches an inning in a 15 – 1 blowout loss to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. He hurts his arm in the effort, and as a result, will undergo season-ending elbow surgery from his ill-advised outing.

Although Alex Rodriguez called and asked the team not to choose him, the Mariners still select the stand-out scholastic shortstop with the first pick in the amateur draft. The Westminster Christian High School (FL) senior, who hit .417 with 17 homers along with 90 stolen bases, told club officials that Seattle was too far away and he wanted to play in the National League.

6/4/1993: Bip Roberts of the Reds hit a home run off Cardinals pitcher Rene Arocha in the bottom of the first inning. The game was rained out in the top of the third inning with the game tied at 2.

Cal Ripken suffers a twisted right knee when he catches his spikes in the infield grass during the Birds’ 5-2 victory over Seattle at Camden Yards. The resulting swollen knee the next day almost ends the Orioles’ shortstop historic streak at Game 1,790, 341 contests shy of Lou Gehrig’s remarkable accomplishment.

1993 – Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Cal Eldred defeats the Seattle Mariners, 5 – 3, for his seventh win of the year. This gives him 20 victories in his first 30 career appearances in the majors, tying him for the “quickest” 20 wins in major league history along Nick Maddox (1908), Russ Ford (1910) and Boo Ferriss (1945).

After serving as Milwaukee’s mascot from 1973 to 1984, Bernie Brewer comes out of retirement after an eight-year absence. The mustachioed costumed character, once renown for sliding into a mug of beer after hometown homers, is brought back by popular demand when the fans vote for his reinstatement by an overwhelming 21,751 to 1,389 margin.

Left fielder Henry Cotto boots the ball‚ then throws over the head of C Bill Haselman as 2 runs score. Hanson‚ who is backing up home‚ fires a throw over 3B Edgar Martinez’s head allowing 2 more runners to score.

The Yankees-Brewers game at County Stadium is interrupted by some 100 seagulls who swoop down onto the field‚ apparently in search of moths hatching in the infield and outfield grass. The Yankees eventually win the game by a score of 5 – 4‚ winning in the 9th on a two-run pinch homer by Kevin Maas. While no players or seagulls are hurt‚ Wade Boggs calls the situation “terribly dangerous. The seagulls will return for tomorrow night’s game‚ but the Brewers will be prepared for the birds. Gus the wonder dog‚ on loan from the Wisconsinwaterfowl association‚ will keep them away.

1993 – Ken Griffey, Jr. of the Seattle Mariners hits his 100th career home run in Seattle’s 6 – 1 victory over Kansas City to become the fourth-youngest to hit the century mark. Only Mel Ott, Eddie Mathews and Tony Conigliaro did it faster than the 23-year-old Griffey.

The 100th anniversary of Cracker Jack is celebrated with a party at Wrigley Field that includes distributing the candy-coated popcorn and peanut treat, that was introduced at the Chicago World Fair in 1893, free of charge to all of the fans attending the Cubs’ game against Florida. Sailor Jack, the company’s mascot, throws out the ceremonial first pitch.

In his first major league at-bat, Marlins catcher Mitch Lyden hits a home run off Jose Bautista in the team’s 6-4 loss to Chicago at Wrigley Field. The second-inning homer will be the only round-tripper in the brief career of the rookie backstop, who will play in just six games, collecting three hits in ten plate appearances.

Baseball owners vote overwhelmingly, 26-2, in favor of expanding the playoffs for the first time since 1969. The new system, which is set to begin in 1994, will double the number of teams that qualify for the postseason to eight by realigning each league to three divisions, with two teams qualifying as wild cards. The 1994 strike will delay its implementation by one year, however.

Carlos Baerga of the Cleveland Indians hits three home runs in a 9 – 5 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Detroit hits five home runs of their own, including a pair each by Travis Fryman and Dan Gladden. Baerga, Fryman and Gladden also tie an American League record for three players with two or more home runs in a nine-inning game.

San Francisco Giants outfielder Darren Lewis sets a major league record by playing his 243rd consecutive game without committing an error. It is also the most ever by any outfielder at the start of his career.

1993 – In a 3 – 2 loss to Chattanooga, Knoxville Smokies manager Garth Iorg and P Travis Baptist are ejected for breaking a rule banning the use of tobacco in the dugout or clubhouse. Baptist is tossed for chewing it and Iorg for not stopping him. The rule has been in effect for all the minor leagues since June 15th.

1993 – Jeff Bagwell does it all in a 5-1 victory over the Dodgers. He singles, doubles, homers, scores twice, drives in two and steals home. Darryl Kile goes the distance for his seventh win. All of Houston’s runs are unearned.

Seattle OF Jay Buhner hits for the cycle in the Mariners’ 8 – 7, 14-inning win over the Athletics. He is the first Mariner player to ever hit for the cycle.

Jay Buhner becomes the first player in Mariners history to hit for the cycle. To complete the task, the right fielder triples and will score the winning run in the 14th inning of an 8-7 victory over the A’s at the Kingdome.

1993 – Eric Anthony smacks a three-run homer off Jim Gott in the top of the ninth to upend the Dodgers, 5-3. Luis Gonzalez had previously gone deep off Tom Candiotti. Doug Drabek hangs in long enough to claim the win.

The Marlins obtain OF Gary Sheffield and P Rich Rodriguez from the Padres for P Trevor Hoffman, Andres Berumen and Jose Martinez. The Fish will give Sheffield a four-year contract extension in September. Hoffman, The 25 year-old rookie right-hander will go on to save 552 games for the team during his fifteen and half years with the franchise and be elected into the Hall of Fame.

Carlton Fisk of the White Sox, plays his 2,226th and final major league game, surpassing Bob Boone’s record of 2,225 for most games caught. Fisk reluctantly retires with 3,999 total bases, the most ever for a catcher. The Sox will exacerbate Fisk’s bitterness by refusing to allow him into the locker room after the Sox make the playoffs this year. When the Sox retire Fisk’s #72 in 1997, Fisk will request that Jerry Reinsdorf and GM Ron Schueler not be there for the ceremony, and when he goes into Cooperstown he will wear a Red Sox cap. A clerical error about three games caught in 1981, in which Fisk relieved, initially gives him a total of 2,229 games caught. This error will appear on Fisk’s Hall of Fame plaque when he is inducted, the 5th edition of Total Baseball, and the 1997 edition of The Sports Encyclopedia – Baseball. Other records books correctly show him with 2,226 games caught lifetime. SABR historian Wayne McElreavy and others note the discrepancy and the plaque and subsequent editions of the record books will correct the total to 2,226.

The Mets tie an 86-year-old record when they lose to the Cardinals, 8 – 5. They have not won two straight games for the 61st consecutive time.

After never having had a multi-homer game in his career, dating back to Little League, Giants 2B Robby Thompson hits two home runs in a game for the second day in a row, leading San Francisco to a 17 – 2 win over the Rockies. Thompson gets five hits on the day for the Giants.

Hall of Famer Roy Campanella dies from a heart attack at the age of 71

Atlanta OF Ron Gant fans four times against Houston’s Darryl Kile, giving him seven consecutive strikeouts, and a record-tying 10 in his last three games. The Astros and Kile defeat the Braves, 3 – 0.

The Calgary Cannons of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League explode for 35 hits in a 23 – 12 pasting of the Las Vegas Stars. Cannons OF Lee Tinsley goes 7 for 8 in the contest. Calgary ties a PCL record with nine consecutive hits in the 2nd inning.

Anthony Young sets a major league record when he drops his 24th straight decision, a 5-3 Mets loss to St. Louis at Shea Stadium. The hard luck New York right-hander, who surpasses the mark established by Boston Dove hurler Cliff Curtis in 1911, will extend the dubious streak to 27 consecutive defeats before winning a game. (Ed. note – Sadly, AY will die on this date in 2017 at the age of 51, losing his battle to brain cancer. LP)

Mike Piazza sets the major league record for home runs by a rookie catcher when he hits his 29th round-tripper, a first-inning two-run shot off San Diego’s Doug Brocail over the center field fence at Jack Murphy Stadium. The National League’s eventual Rookie of the Year, who will finish the season with 35, breaks the mark set by Matt Nokes, who was a freshman backstop for the Tigers in 1987.

Expos OF Curtis Pride – who is mostly deaf – gets his first major league hit in Montreal’s 8 – 7, 12-inning win over the Phillies. The Phillies score all seven in the 6th when they knock out Dennis Martinez. Darren Daulton homers and Lenny Dykstra hits a triple in the frame. Mitch Williams walks two and gives up a hit in the 12th in losing. Tim Scott is the winner, striking out the side in the 12th.

In a last try for the pennant, the Yankees obtain 40-year-old vet Frank Tanana from the Mets for minor league P Kenny Greer. Tanana will go 0-2 to finish out his career at 240-236, and set a major-league record for most wins without racking up a 20-win season.

Ranger right-hander Nolan Ryan, in his next to last major league appearance, fans California catcher Greg Myers for his 5,714th and final career strikeout. The ‘Ryan Express’ will end his 27-year career ranking first all-time in strikeouts.

Mike Stanley, with the Yankees trailing by two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, hits a pop fly to left field for the apparent third out to end the game, but time had been called just as the pitch was delivered due to a fan running out onto the Yankee Stadium field. Given a second chance, the Bronx Bomber catcher singles, which is followed by a Wade Boggs hit, a walk to Dion James, and a Don Mattingly single that drives in two runs to beat the Red Sox, 4-3.

Tom Glavine notches his 20th victory of the season as the Braves beat the Mets at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, 11-2. The southpaw becomes the first National League hurler since Ferguson Jenkins (1973) to win 20 games in three consecutive seasons.

1993 – The Phils lose, 6 – 5, to the Expos when John Kruk makes a 9th-inning error. With their second loss in three games to Montreal, the Phils’ lead drops to 4 games with 11 to play. Their biggest lead has been 11 1/2 games.

At Montreal, the Braves swamp the red-hot Expos by a score of 18 – 5 as the two teams combine to use a record 13 pinch hitters. The Expos, winners of 19 of their last 22 games, and fighting to catch the Phils, use four pinch batters, the Braves a record 9. In the 7th, Bobby Cox decides to rest his regulars and sends a record six pinch hitters to the plate, including the first five batters, another record.

The Rockies win their 63rd game of the year, beating the Padres, 15 – 4. Colorado (63-90) is now slightly ahead of the expansion Marlins (62-89). Andres Galarraga is 4 for 6 to raise his average to .381 but must get 502 plate appearances to beat the idle Tony Gwynn for the batting title.

9/26/1993 – In the second game of the doubleheader, the Pirates were not clear about their batting order against the Cubs. In the bottom of the first, the first five players batted in order. The fifth-place hitter, Al Martin, knocked in the game’s only run with an infield single. The scoreboard listed Tom Foley batting sixth, Tom Prince seventh and Rich Aude eighth. The correct order was Aude, Foley and Prince. When Foley batted in Aude’s spot and grounded out, the Cubs properly did nothing. Aude led off the second, which matched neither lineup, and singled to center. The Cubs then talked to the umpires about the batting order. Aude was taken off the bases and Prince was declared out. In spite of the difficulties, the Pirates won the game, 1-0.

Cubs’ reliever Randy Myers tosses a perfect ninth inning to become the first National League pitcher to record 50 saves in a season when the team beats the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine, 7-3. The 30 year-old southpaw closer, best known for being one of the Reds’ Nasty Boys, will finish the season with a major-league leading 53 saves.

Mike Piazza, who broke the major league rookie record for home runs by a catcher earlier in the month, sets another mark for round-trippers when he hits his 34th, surpassing the previous L.A. Dodger mark shared by Steve Garvey (1977) and Pedro Guerrero (1985). Duke Snider established the franchise record with 43 homers playing with Brooklyn in 1956.

Bo Jackson’s three-run home run is the difference in Chicago’s 4-2 win over Seattle. The victory enables the White Sox to clinch their first American League West title in ten years.

With a 2-0 victory over the Brewers in Milwaukee’s County Stadium, the Blue Jays clinch their third consecutive American League East title. Toronto will go on to beat the Phillies in six games, capturing their second straight World Series.

George Brett plays his last game at Kauffman Stadium, and after the Royals’ 3-2 ninth inning walk-off victory, a post-game tribute is held to honor the future Hall of Famer. The much-maligned closer, who posted a 20.25 ERA, losing twice in his three Fall Classic appearances, will be best remembered for giving up Joe Carter’s dramatic walk-off home run that clinched the World Championship for Toronto.

1993 – The Orioles sign free agent 1B Rafael Palmeiro, while the Indians hand free agent Dennis Martinez a two-year contract worth $9 million. With the Expos, Martinez passed up his chance to reach the playoffs with the Braves when he nixed an August 25th trade, exercising his veto rights as a 10-and-5 player. Instead he stayed with Montreal and helped them make their run at the Phillies.
