5/4/1980 – The Dodgers were visiting Philadelphia and the top of the first inning was not Dallas Green’s best day on the way to the World Series championship. Davey Lopes singled and Rudy Law reached on an infield error. After Reggie Smith popped out, Law stole second base. Steve Garvey reached on an infield single, scoring the first run of the game. Dusty Baker then hit into a force out leaving runners on first and third but had batted out of turn. Green came out and pointed out the fact that the proper batter had not hit. Thus Ron Cey was called out, the runners restored to their previous bases and Baker batted again. This time he hit a three-run homer to left. Green now was very upset saying that Baker should not have batted believing according to newspaper accounts that Baker’s force out should count and Cey should be ruled out . He was ejected from the game and protested the game. The protest was denied as the rules were followed correctly. The incorrect decision was Green’s when he did not take the out on Baker’s first trip to the plate. The Dodgers eventually won the game 12-10.

Three-time Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez, who last pitched in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, signs a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. The right-hander, who has been slowed by injuries the past three seasons, will first head to the disabled list and is not expected to play for another three weeks.

The Phillies defeat the Nationals, 9 – 3, as Hunter Pence hits a pair of two-run homers in support of Cole Hamels’ pitching. Washington’s sole highlight comes in the the 1st, when rookie Bryce Harper pulls off a steal of home on a pick-off throw to first; Harper had reached base on a hit-by-pitch which Hamels later admits was a deliberate gesture aimed at the phenom’s cocky attitude after barely a week in the bigs; he will be suspended for five games as a result. In the 6th inning, RF Jayson Werth breaks his wrist in attempting a sliding catch in the outfield and will be out until August, a tough break for the Nats who have managed to stay in first place in spite of the absence of two other key players, Ryan Zimmerman and Michael Morse, who are both injured.
Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announces Ryne Sandberg has been named as the interim manager of the team, replacing Charlie Manuel, who won more games than any other skipper in franchise history. During his nine seasons in the Philadelphia dugout, the 69 year-old, who had never been selected as the NL Manager of the Year, led the club to five consecutive division titles and a world championship in 2008.
Ryne Sandberg earns his first win as a manager when the Phillies stop the Dodgers’ ten-game winning streak, 3 – 2, as Michael Young drives in the winning run when SS Hanley Ramirez bobbles a potential inning-ending double play grounder with the bases loaded. Prior to the loss, the Dodgers had been just the third team since 1900 to win 42 of 50 games.
